    The last jar I filled halfway. One of the full jars I filled with 12 tablespoons of sea salt and mixed it. The other full jar I left with only clear tap water. The jar that was half full I mixed in six tablespoons of sea salt. I put an egg in each jar. After I put the egg in the jar that was half full, I filled the rest with clear tap water so that the bottom half was salt water and the top half was clear tap water. I Recorded the results of each jar and took a picture of each. The jar that was only water: the egg went straight to the bottom. The jar that was all salt water: the egg floated on the top. The jar that was half salt water, half tap water: the egg submerged but stayed perfectly between the salt and tap water. If I were to do this project again in the future, I would use multiple mixtures in the water and test which substances were the most dense. Some problems could be that the amount of salt and water can vary and the size and weight of the eggs can also vary. To fix these problems, I could use the same egg for all of the mixtures.     Procedure: I started off by removing the iron using the magnet, and then I weighed all of the iron I obtained from the mixture in a container I already knew the weight of and calculated the net weight of the iron. Next, I took the remaining contents of the mixture and added it with 50 mL of distilled water in the 100 mL beaker, heated it up to separate the sodium chloride and benzoic acid from the insoluble sand, then poured out the benzoic acid and sodium chloride into a separate cup and allowed I to chill in an ice bath for approximately five minutes. I dried up the sand and calculated the net weight for that. I poured the benzoic acid and sodium chloride mixture into a filtered funnel that caught the majority of the benzoic acid and allowed the sodium chloride to drain through to the cup.     The purpose of this experiment was to use various methods of analysis to determine the identity of an unknown volatile liquid. In the first part of the experiment, the molecular mass was found by using water to find the volume of a flask through calculations and this as well as the mass of the gas of the unknown liquid were put into the a manipulated version of the ideal gas equation to determine the molar mass of the liquid, which was 14.21g per mole. The next part was used to determine the density of the volatile liquid. First the volatile liquid was placed in a pyncometer and massed; water was then placed in the same (now clean and empty) pyncometer and massed. The density equation was manipulated using the data for water to solve for the mL of the capillary tube. This new information was used to find the density of the liquid, which was 1.33g/mL. The last part of the experiment was used to determine the boiling point of the volatile liquid. A test tube was placed inverted in a flask filled with the unknown liquid that was in a water bath heating. When bubbles from the test tube slowed and began to go back into the test tube, the temperature was taken and this served as a measurement of the boiling point. The average measured boiling point was 60.2°C. The measured data was inadequate to identify the liquid with. The unknown liquid was revealed to be methanol; the revealed identity could then be used to compare the data to the actual information for methanol. The molar mass was found to have a percent error of 55.6%, the density had a percent error of 68.1% and the boiling point had one of 6.95%. The measured data for the boiling point was fairly accurate, but the molar mass and the density both had very large percent error. The reasons for this will be discussed more in the discussion.…

Cleaning iron – because very corrosive used to remove the oxide layer from iron or steel before they are galvanised or electroplated.  Describe the processes used to extract sulfur from mineral deposits, identifying the properties of sulfur which allow its extraction and analyzing potential environmental issues that may be associated with its extraction Most sulphur is extracted from mineral deposits using the Frasch process. Superheated stream is pumped down the outer of 3 concentric pipes into the sulphur deposit, and since sulphur has a low melting point (119) it is readily melted. At the same time, compressed air is blown down the inner pipe, and because sulphur has a relatively low density, the air is able to force the molten sulphur up the middle pipe to the surface where it resolidifies. The insolubility of sulphur in water means that it separates from any water, leaving 99.5% pure sulphur. Sulfur is also obtained from hydrogen sulphide in natural gas and petroleum. Incomplete combustion of H2S in a furnace produces SO2 and S. 3H2S(g) + O2(g)  H2S(g) + 3S(g) + SO2(g) The mixture is cooled to condense the sulphur.
