Assignment: The Learning Autobiography Formal and Informal Learning

Date: August 26, 2010

I started my formal education in elementary school when I traveled with my

parents. My father was in the United States Army, and I lived in Germany for

three years. Then we moved to Japan where I lived for four years. The two things that stuck in my mind were the earthquakes we had every day and my dogs being very scared.

I began junior high school in Colorado Springs, Colorado where I took the classes that were required. I had a hard time with math and reading. I learned that I had

dyslexia and had to be in special education classes. I had to

There was one teacher who helped me with my speech class and she would take time to listen to my speeches that I prepared. She always wanted to make sure I had

the speeches timed down to the minute. Her name was Ms. Muto. Ms. Muto also helped me with my computer work, to make sure I understood how to write the programs on the

homework that was given to me back in 1983.

I went on to graduate form Apache Junction High School in 1985 and received my

diploma from there.

When high school was done I did different kinds of jobs but I never found anything that I was good at. I worked in two different nursing homes, but I was too small of a person to lift people, so I quit. Also, I was not trained on how to handle elderly people. I mostly helped the LPN’s in what ever they needed done. My brother was a nurse and told me some of the things that I needed to know, but I never could understand what he told

For my service this year, I was involved with Applecross Opal Nursing Home. Opal age care was a great help to me in opening my eyes to the desperate need for an extra pair of hands and the importance of nursing homes. Not only to the individual admitted in, but also to their families and friends. As I would arrive at 12.00 every time, I would go straight into lending a hand with lunch. Handing out the meals, packing away, cleaning up and keeping an eye on a few of the residents was my first job done. Then I would wonder through the compound talking to the residents, playing and colouring in with them and I would gather and assist them to and from their rooms. With all these jobs, you had to keep a look out for and take extra care with some of the more dependant residents.…

The student that interested me the most was a student named Justin I believe. He was tiny and wore a big blue shirt I think. Before I went back to school I had worked at several places that paid minimum wage and did not offer much room for advancement. I tried convenient store work, Medical Records Clerk, or Unit Secretary, and even driving a semi tractor trailer over the road. I just was not making very much money. Oh, I paid my bills…

During my educational journey specifically at the high school, my goal was to be a best student in our year group. But I could not achieve it. I could not achieve it because, I thought I could do all my academical alone. I could not management my time well and also reframe myself from leadership and other peer responsibilities. With this behavior, I could not have much information about what is going around on campus and the available platforms to learn and explore more.…

My educational goals can be said to be broken down into three parts that are really the means to my ends which is the fourth and most important goal. First, Im working on getting good grades in every class, I want to work on having and maintaining a high competitive GPA. My second goal is to get my Bachelors in Political Science in an ideal time frame of two more years. My third goal and one that is out of my hands, one may say, is getting a scholarship. I know there is a large amount of competitive students in the school, who are well deserving of scholarships but I need this scholarship to alleviate my parents from their stress and hard work to keep up with my payments. The last and really my main goal, where my eyes are set and where I,…

At first I was very nervous to apply as a volunteer and had doubts about being hired. After a long process of applications, interviews, and trainings, I was assigned to work at 6-CD on Geriatric floor. While I was volunteering there I met with different people, nurses, doctors, and pharmacy technicians. Seeing the pace of work they work in made me realize how important it is to work in healthcare. For me, the most significant issue was to get the used to patients who have passed away. I have seen a situation where a nurse and a doctor telling a family member that their father has passed away. At first I hesitated and asked myself if I am brave enough to do the same in future. As I volunteered there I realized I got used to everything, I was able to handle…

I had to sweep the floors, clean the utility rooms, and wash the walls every day, and make my rounds on the patients on my own time. And six weeks before I graduated I told the nun there I was sick but she didn’t believe me. So for the treatment I had to take aspirin around the clock to where my ears were ringing. That’s how they knew I had enough aspirin in my system. I ended up having Rheumatic fever and then after I graduated I had to stay in bed for three months and back then there was no penicillin. After I finished my training I continued to work for Mercy Hospital as a nurse. Being a nurse I was always very busy. Every day I had to sweep the floor and wash the utility rooms, and sterilize the room for the next patient and all that and had to buy my own syringes and needles and had to sharpen the needles themselves. I worked a lot of hours. There was before the state requirement for overtime pay. We couldn’t leave until the next nurse showed up to relieve…

I headed to my first class which just so happened to be my favorite subject, English. The hallways were very wide but when filled with students I felt like I had to shove my way through just to get to my locker. The lockers were a mixture between Gray and purple. The school colors were supposed to be purple and silver but there was no way that these lockers could be considered. I took a look at the little piece of paper that the lady in the office had given me and tried out the combination on my locker. It took me about five minutes to open it and after struggling for that long I was a little irritated so when it did open, it flew open and slammed into the locker next to mine. I held my breath and hoped that nobody had noticed. I took a long deep breath and slowly opened my eyes again. Luckily I was still standing alone and nobody around was looking at me. I put my extra books and notebooks into the locker and and closed it as quietly as I could.…

Most people think that education comes from school, but school is not the only place you learn. When you are a baby you learn from your parents, family, friends, playmates, and surroundings. You don’t go to school to learn to walk, crawl, or eat. You learn all that from your parents at home.…

Most people go back to school because they need a degree to obtain a higher paying job or for the thrill of lifelong learning. It's hard to gain proper employment without it these days. Employers prefer someone with a Liberal Arts degree lacking experience over someone with years of experience and no degree. My neices' struggles and constant encouragement from my supervisor were some factors that lead to my decison to return to school. I realized that continuing an education will be good for my personal and professional growth.…
