Article Analysis: Why Generation Y Yuppies Are Unhappy '
To what extent do you think the observations made about the different generations in the US and the UK also apply to Austria?
According to the article “Why Generation Y Yuppies Are Unhappy” by Tim Urban published in the U.S. edition of the Huffpost College, people from generation Y are unhappy because of their high expectations that cannot keep up with reality. The article claims that so-called GYPSIES think they are special and are therefore entitled to a better career than everyone else. Moreover, they seem to have an inflated view of themselves which leads to them thinking they are superior over others.
While I do agree with some parts of the article, I also strongly disagree with certain aspects the author mentions about young adults …show more content…
This led to a huge change – there are less secure careers and teenagers and young adults grow up without knowing if they are even able to get a job (no matter the qualifications). Now, we must not forget that generation Y was raised with the same optimism their parents had had in their time.
In this case, I agree with the author when he says that GYPSIES expect great careers for themselves. They have been raised by parents who have a lot of optimism and, as the Baby Boomer’s parents did as well, want their children to have good or even better lives.
Nevertheless, I do not think the majority of GYPSIES expect to start with great careers immediately without working for it. Moreover, not everyone has entitlement issues that “are often based on an unfounded sense of superiority and deservingness”. In my opinion the article exaggerates the feeling of superiority of GYPSIES and their view about themselves and makes them appear as …show more content…
Baby Boomers were able to improve their living standards because of economic growth. During their time, the economy went up giving them more possibilities. Nowadays, with a shrinking economy, living standards of young adults might not be able to keep up with those of their parents. Therefore, generation Y will probably have to live a ‘worse’ life than their parents which does not necessarily mean it is a bad life.
In my opinion, the differences between generations (Baby Boomers vs Generation Y) apply to all industrialized countries. Housing prices increase not only in the U.S. and the UK, but also in Austria. When I look at prices of ‘student’ apartments, I often think this is ridiculous. Most students do not earn any money, and if they do it is probably not much, so their parents have to pay for apartments. However, their parents presumably have to pay for an apartment or house where they live as well. And most likely they do not earn much more money than they have some years
