Argumentative Essay: The Spartan Spin Senior Project
One of the most commonly heard complaints at the end of the year comes from seniors. The complaint is from students in regards to the senior project.
Of 99 seniors who took the Spartan Spin Senior Project survey, 63.6 percent voted for the termination of the senior project. But since there is no possible avoidance of the project, the least that can be done is amend it in order to make the work more fulfilling for students.
Every day, students have to adhere to structures in the classroom, but this should not be the same with the senior project.
The project is intended as a capstone of one’s skills; however, it should also allow for self-expression. One such way to allow for more creativity would be to get rid of the essay’s overly rigid format. …show more content…
This freedom will make it more exciting and less of a chore for students.
Furthermore, not all students are completing the minimum of 20 hours required for the project. About 12 percent of the seniors surveyed who passed their project had less than 15 hours, yet 63 percent did more than what was needed.
Each project requires a different amount of dedication and time. While one project may take five hours, another project could take 20 to 30 hours. The minimum hours required for the project should be five, since, according to our survey, 97 percent of seniors felt this was a fair time constraint. Students should be judged on the impact their project has on them, not time put into it.
Many students, 27 percent, are not satisfied with the senior project advisor’s involvement in their projects. But one person cannot realistically check in with each student in depth, so we propose hiring an additional advisor to help check in with students.
With only one advisor, advisory teachers are responsible for assisting seniors with their projects, taking time away from their preparation for normal classes. Advisory teachers often take time during classes, during prep periods and outside of school hours to help seniors write essays and practice presentations. The addition of another advisor will help relieve these unnecessary
