My Argument Style- Essay I
Several months after the birth of my youngest daughter, I took her to my mom’s house for her first visit. Soon the two of us were settled in, and my mom called my grandmother down to join in our visit. Being a devoted wife, mother of five, as well as a college student, my time is limited, but because my grandmother only lives a couple blocks away from my mom’s house she was there knocking on the door in a matter of minutes. As she came ushering in I stood up to great her. She through her hands up to the sky reached down for my belly and shouted “when is the next one due Sandy?!” I smiled with embarrassment, shook my head as to say no and in a small voice I simply said “O no she is our last.” My grandmother has always had a way with words but in my family talking back was not an option. Not even when I was called fat right to my face.
My mom used to tell me stories about my grandma having the quickest backhand this side of the Mississippi River. I remember being lectured, spanked, and grounded when for example, my mom would say I said or did something I did not do. I didn’t take long for me to learn to be a While I was never hit in my face, like my mom was, she had still placed the fear of God in me. I wouldn’t dare argue with my mom, not as a child, not as teen, not even now to this day. When anyone has in an authoritative position becomes upset with me I become extremely uncomfortable. My argument style is becomes consensual. I often become very quiet, and can be indecisive. I don’t argue, explain, defend, or reference anything unless otherwise instructed by an authorized authority. Although I was an only child, I was not the only person at home that was being controlled by my mom. She also told my dad what to do and how to do it, and he was usually consensual to any requests my mom had. There for, I feel I learned a lot about being consensual from my father.
On payday my dad would bring home his check and hand it directly to my

I am her oldest child. I remember that young woman with a quick temper who could yell when she needed to. Now having my own children, I know that no one sees your worst sides like your children do. But I also watched her change, with the death of her own parents when she was in her 20’s, through the loss of a son, and through her battles with cancer. With each sorrow, mum grew in wisdom and strength, she reached out in ways that I am only still becoming aware of. She spoke with other mothers who lost sons and daughters, she knew the pain, she knew how awful that could be, and she knew how to comfort, hug, and cry with those who had lost one of their own. Through that loss she gained a different perspective on being a mother. She learned that love speaks louder than anger and that some things are not worth the fight. It’s a grandmother’s wisdom – and I hope and pray that I listened enough to take those lessons so hard learned to heart. When mum and dad found out last year that the cancer was terminal, that the cancer that we had hoped, prayed and believed was defeated had come back. She knew where she was going, and that she would see Wilder, my brother, again. That she would fight as hard as she…

She was the only one that could bail me out of time out when i got in trouble, the only one that would play dress up with me because I was the only girl growing up, and the only one that allowed me to watch TV until my eyes fell out. I loved staying up late listening to her spooky ghost stories and dreaded waking up early for Sunday morning bible study with her. Grandma Bea was the big sister I always wanted, and regretfully, I am just now realizing it. She had been a registered nurse for years, and worked as a supervisor in a nursing home. Recently, my family began to notice her regular calls were fading from the cheery talk about how great work was, to her worrying someone was stealing from her. Some of her belongings began to disappear. When her mother's jewelry came up missing, my dad went over to make sure she didn't just misplace it. After searching for hours, he plopped down on the couch for a breather when, low and behold, the missing jewels were found in between the couch cushions. As my family's concern for her well-being began to grow, she reasoned this was only what comes of old age along with her lousy eyesight and somewhat hard of hearing. She was not able to drive at night. If she happened to be behind the wheel at night fall, she would pull over to switch seats with someone. Grandma is such a stubborn woman. She argued with the family until they were convinced that she could stay at her own apartment. After all, she lived in a senior living community located directly across the street from her job. She was still a certified registered nurse and was still my father's mother, so he let her be and dismissed it as she disputed. Not too long after that episode, my dad received an urgent message from her exclaiming that there were aliens in her apartment, and she needed to get picked up immediately. As bogus as that sounded, my dad rushed over as soon as he could. He…

I spoke how kind hearted she was, so patient and loving. She gave her last years to my sister and I. My family grew apart. No more family dinners or holidays together. She was the glue that held everything together. The next 6 or 7 years were hard on my sister and I. Even though we always had a bed to sleep in, we were always going house to house. We didn’t really had a home. We were basically left on our own like orphans. I took care of my grandfather, always worked, went to church and at the age of 18 gave birth to a beautiful healthy boy. I grew up too fast without realizing what to do or how to do it. However I remember her teachings and the way she cared for all her grandkids and I applied everything that was taught to my son. My son at the age of 2 was formally diagnosed with mild autism. I have to admit my life has never been full of roses but my grandmother made it worthwhile. She would have fell in love with my son. He looks just like my father (my father was murdered when I was 8 months old). The strength I receive every day to take care of my family is from my 12 years of life with my grandmother. The day she died changed my life forever but it also taught me many things. I agree that I grew a little too fast but everything happens for a reason. I will not be given a cross to bear that I am not able to handle. I can handle many situations and I thank my grandmother for that since I am a…

Even though Hip Hop has been with us since the 70s, the debate still prolongs about which rapper icon is better, Tupac or Biggie. It started as a movement that regrouped four main elements; DJing, MCing, Graffiti art and break dancing. Those four elements, which are completely different all have the same aspects and small details that, give to us what we know as Hip Hop. On the other hand, MCing, which is basically rapping, is also formed of five different styles of rap. The unimaginable success of two of those particular styles of rap, materialistic rap and gangster rap, is what defined the image of Hip Hop for the past fifteen years. In fact, for the unused to Hip Hop, this style of music is all about money, cars, clothes, women, and power. That image has been reinforced by video clips and by the influence it has on our youth. This is where our problem appears; that success was so overwhelming that the rest of the Hip Hop movement was shadowed and put aside; therefore, the image people had on Hip Hop was actually the image of Gangster and Materialistic rap. However, when you know about Hip Hop, you know that rap is mostly poetry, that the Hip Hop movement has worked alongside the church to spread out the message of god, that in some schools, rap is being taught in English Literature classes instead of regular poetry.…

“Not Guilty” of murdering her two year old daughter, Caylee. How could this be? Casey Anthony was cleared of first degree murder, aggravated manslaughter, and aggravated child abuse charges on Tuesday, July 5, 2011. This is the biggest disputed verdict since the O.J. Simpson trial in 1995 and everyone has been watching as this trail unfolded a significant amount of evidence against Anthony. Finding Casey Anthony not guilty of murder is a misrepresentation of our judicial system because the evidence against her is overwhelming and Anthony continually told lies to the law enforcement authorities.…

The summer before sixth grade I attended sleep away camp in upstate New York. I had a great time up there, however I returned home to some grim news. While I was away my great aunt had gotten pneumonia, and was very ill. She was one hundred and one years old at the time, and she had been nearing the end for quite a while by that point. This, however, seemed to be the final stretch and I was told that there was a chance that the upcoming weekend could be the last time that I would ever see her. My family had planned to travel out to visit her the following weekend and asked if I had wanted to come as well. Throughout the years I had grown very close to her, as we spent many family events together. I cherish my memories of spending time with her at Thanksgiving and Christmas. I wanted to see her one last time to value all the time that I had left so I decided to go with my family.…

The issue of whether or not college athletes should be paid for play has been a heated debate across the nation for years. Most would say that college athletes are already paid to play by the scholorships that they are given such as free tuition, meals, books, room and board. However, some would say that college athletes are being taken advantage of by the coaches, universities they attend and the NCAA because of the career ending injuries, lack of being able to support themselves off of campus and the lack of a complete education. There are many pros and cons to this heated debate and as we have seen in various reports and statements from the NCAA on why college athletes should or shouldn’t be paid to play.…

I had brought my grandma a piece of my birthday cake that was left over from my party the day before, even though I didn’t know she couldn’t eat it because it had way too much sugar in it. I came back the next day to visit my grandma in hospice, and I noticed the cake was still sitting in the same spot I had left it the day before. I asked my mother, and my grandpa why she hadn’t eaten it, and the nurse explained to me that she couldn’t eat anything with that much sugar in it. A couple hours later I lost my loving grandma to such a horrible disease. I now only have memories of her, and can only wish she would be there for me when I graduated high school two years ago, and also to watch all the huge steps that I will take later in my…

Thanksgiving dinner had finally been over and we all started to clean up. This is where my grandmother usually does all the work but this year we all told her you do way too much for us, it’s your turn to relax. My mom and I were in charge of doing the dishes and as we were doing them she looked at me and said, "Eri, don't take advantage of the time you have left here on…

My mom got a job in Houston at an apartment complex. I decided the best decision would be to move in with my dad. He stayed single up until about a year after I moved in. It was good until his girlfriend, Misty, moved in. Misty was the controlling one in the relationship I would have to say she was worse than my dad. I was putting my basketball uniform in the washing machine then Misty comes up to me and yells because I wasted detergent and more cloths could have went in there. My dad did not take up for me when she was controlling me. I was his kid and did not think it was right for her to discipline me. My dad called on me so I went in their room. I ignored Misty because I was tired of her trying to be my mom. For not listening I got held down on the bed and with my dads right hand I got beaten in the head three times with his fist. I tried running away to get help but my dad and Misty hid the keys from me. They also took my phone away from me so I could not call for help. As I sat in my bed…

The recreational use of Marijuana should be legalized. According to the New York Times The social costs of the marijuana laws are vast. There were 658,000 arrests for marijuana possession in 2012, according to F.B.I. Figures compared with 256,000 for cocaine, heroin and their derivatives. Even worse, the result is racist, falling disproportionately on young black men, ruining their lives and creating new generations of career criminals. It is widely accepted by society and by lawmakers that the drinking of alcohol is okay and safe for us and we should drink it. However, not many of us take notice all the fighting, vandalism, and rape that happens because of the influence of drinking alcohol. But what would happen if everyone smoked marijuana instead of consuming alcohol? How did we come to the realization that marijuana is bad and alcohol is okay? Research provided by NORML Foundation, whose mission is to reform marijuana laws, marijuana is the third most popular leisure drug in America (following only alcohol and tobacco). Around 100 million Americans have been utilized cannabis during their lifetime at least once, and 14 million of them consistently consume that product regardless of their fear of being arrested. (Normal) The reason those people smoke marijuana is the relaxation feelings that the substance provides. Even though the substance does not have serious drawbacks, smoking weed is still considered as a crime. Therefore, our government authorities should generate laws that would reveal the current situation regarding cannabis consumption, not contradict it.…
