apples and bananas
A fruit grown throughout the world in temperate climates for at least 3,000 years, there are now thousands of varieties from yellow to green to red, tender to crisp, sweet to tart and simple to complex. The apple tree and pear tree are related to each other--They are both part of the rose family. "Baking" apples are varieties that hold up well when cooked and don't turn mushy. Good baking apples are:
Rome Beauty (Queen of the bakers because cooking accentuates its flavor)
Golden Delicioius (holds it's shape well, unlike Red Delicious which should not be used for baking)

If you are new to eating avocados, look for Haas avocados from California. When they are ripe they will have a dark green to black skin and will be firm to the touch but will yield to gentle pressure. Ripe avos can be placed in the fridge uncut for two to three days. Unripe ones should be stored at room temperature. To ripen place them in a brown paper bag at room temperature until soft, usually 2-5 days. Adding an apple or banana to the bag will speed up the process due to ethylene gas from the fruit.…

In 1982, some 1,691 farms produced apples on 29,943 acres—an average size of 17.7 acres of apples per farm. By 2007, while the farm count had only declined to 1,514 farms, the acreage devoted to apples fell to 15,286—10.1 acres per farm (Lee, Weber). Based on this information, one can see that the number and acres of farms in this area are decreasing. This is an issue that is well known to the New England Apple Association and its executive director, Russell Powell. There are a couple of key problems that particularly need to be addressed. One of these is associated with competition. New England’s competitors are dominating the apple market, both domestically and internationally. This will undoubtedly cause New England apples to increasingly lose market share if nothing is done. Another problem is when we look at options to create sliced apples. Currently, there are very few facilities available that are within sufficient range of their orchards. The New England Apple Association must find a way to establish a trade connection with these facilities or come up with different ways to slice their apple in order to tap into the sliced apple…

"Oranges" begins with Gary Soto narrating one of his life experiences in this poem. He remembers a particular experience of walking side by side with a girl. There are two characters a twelve year old boy and his date. When the poem begins, the narrator is alone, and on his way to go pick up the girl. It was winter time and he only had two oranges with him, which his purpose was to share them with his date. The beginning of the poem is not very positive, though, but rather negative. In addition, he allows his focus wandering from the poem's main situation, his first experience with a girl, and instead makes a point of dwelling on the cold weather.…

When it is cut horizontally, the little pit where the seeds are kept is in the shape of a star and feels like thin cardboard. There were five seeds, all dark brown and shaped like a raindrop. The flesh was softer on its own without the protection of the skin and almost mushy. When I looked even closer, it seemed that the flesh of the apple was made up of tiny crystals that glistened in the light because of the juice and its cream coloring. The inside was even colder since it was wet. The sweet smell of the apple grew stronger and I finally gave in and took a…
