Antioxidant Properties Of R. Discolor Lab Report
The antioxidant property of R. discolor is correlated to the phytochemicals present in the plant. Yet, there is no existing claim that the anthocyanin content of this plant is the sole compound that exhibit the antioxidant property. Plants contain a wide variety of antioxidants, and it is difficult to separately measure the antioxidant capacity of each compound (Medini, Fellah, Ksouri, & Abdelly, 2014). As a result, this study was conducted to evaluate the total antioxidant capacity of the crude leaf extract with special reference to phytochemicals found in the plant. Correspondingly, there is no literature presented about the antiangiogenic potential of R. discolor extracts. So, this investigation was done to determine the antiangiogenic potential …show more content…
Celecoxib (CLX) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used as a positive control for the antiangiogenesis assay
Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) an organosulfur compound with the formula (CH₃)₂SO which is capable of dissolving polar and nonpolar compounds.
DPPH is also known as 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl. It is a stable free radical commonly used to evaluate the ability of compounds to act as free radical scavengers and to measure the antioxidant activity of R. discolor extract.
Ethyl Alcohol is an organic solvent with molecular formula is C2H5OH. It is used for the extraction of active compounds from the soaked R. discolor leaves.
Flavonoids are the most common group of polyphenolic compounds with variable phenolic structures possessing several biological activities.
Folin-ciocalteu Reagent is a compound used in in vitro colorimetric assay used for the estimation of phenolic content of samples.
Free Radicals are atoms or groups of atoms with an unpaired number of electrons. It can be formed when oxygen interacts with certain molecules.
Free Radical Scavenging Activity is the ability of compounds to remove free radicals and reactive oxygen

Another form of cell injury is free radicals and reactive oxygen species. “An important mechanism of cellular injury is injury induced by free radicals, especially by reactive oxygen species (ROS); this form of injury is called oxidative stress” (Heuther and McCance, 2012). Free radicals are produced by cells and are crucial to normal cellular metabolism. Free radicals can form damaging chemical bonds with lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates. The most commonly defined free radicals are the reactive oxygen species (ROS) which contribute to mitochondrial dysfunction and are linked to many human diseases and the aging process. According to a holistic physician, Dr. Jill Marjama-Lyons, “oxidative stress is one of the leading theories as to what might cause dopamine cell death in Parkinson’s disease” (2003).…

Molecular oxygen can easily accept unpaired electrons giving rise to a group of partially reduced species, generally termed ROS. The ROS include: superoxide (O2•−), H2O2, hydroxyl radical (HO.), peroxyl (ROO.) and alkoxyl (RO.) radicals, which may be implicated in the initiation and propagation of free radical chain reactions and are potentially highly deleterious to cells (Riley, 1994).…

2). Free radicals are harmful, causing cell damage or apoptosis which is cell death. Oxidation reactions can produce free radicals, free radicals can multiply through a chain reactions resulting in the release of thousands of these cellular oxidants. When the chain reactions starts it spreads to cells throughout the body. These free radical molecules are very unbalanced, so they look to bond with other molecules (Panglossi 2). When this happens, cells can become so badly damaged that DNA codes can be altered and immunity can be compromised. Contact with a free radical or oxidant on this scale can create cellular deterioration, resulting in diseases like cancer. Free radicals are also responsible for aging and tissue…
