Anthropologie – Introduction and Overview Urban Outfitters, Inc. is a publicly traded American company that owns and operates over 400 retail locations in all of their stores divisions. The five retail brands they have are Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Free People, Terrain, and BHLDN. Urban Oufitters have about 170 locations now and is continuously growing. The reason why they have become so successful is because of their passion of whom they stand for as a company. In addition, they seek to create a differential shopping experience. Now, Urban Outfitters merchandise is described as sexy, vintage, bohemian, and hipster. They are mainly known to be servicing the “hipster” and “vintage” culture and fashion. Since their target market is the ages of 18-30 years old and their sales associates are around the same ages they want to create that emotional bond with all the consumers that walk in to the door. In 2011, they then brought in the Polaroid cameras, which in no time became a huge hit to their consumers. Even though Urban Outfitters had some controversies with their clothing they sold, due to religious and ethnic issues, they continued to still have brand loyal consumers. Urban Outfitters, to this day, is one of the most popular and strongest stores for their target market.
The retailer Anthropologie was established in Wayne, Pennsylvania in 1992. Having both online exclusive shopping as well as catalogs for their customers. Owned by Urban Outfitters, originally, Anthropologie was a label being sold at Urban Outfitters before becoming its own specialty store (About.com Retail Industry). Currently, Anthropologie has one hundred and seventy five stores in US, Canada, and London (Anthropologie.com). Urban Outfitters was introduced in 1970 by Richard Hayne and Scott Belair and later opened the specialty stores Free People (About.com Retail Industry), and eventually introducing Anthropologie.     Urban Outfitters doesn’t even sell items identical to itself, they try to make every store unique. Stated in Big box stores could sell items similar but like I said in the previous question, it would cost them more than they make just to market a new style. Even if they did make similar items, in order to make it work they’d have to mass produce these items, something that Urban Outfitters doesn’t do. That alone would send the unique shopping experience that Urban Outfitters has out the window for the big box stores. As crazy as it sounds, knowing that only 40 or so people have the same shirt as you rather than 1,000 people is more comforting for most people. Another reason why they wouldn’t be able to sell merchandise identical to Urban Outfitters is because most of Urban Outfitters items are private labeled. Created and produced for by them for them. Trying to keep their unique image I’m sure U.O wouldn’t sell out their unique labels so they could be sold at other stores. If it so happened that similar things were starting to be sold in the big box stores, U.O would probably move on to a new market trend just to keep their unique hip image.     ABSTRACT: Retailing in India is one of the pillars of its economy and accounts for about 15 percent of its GDP. Organized retailing is absent in most rural and small towns of India. Supermarkets and similar organized retail stores account for just 4 percent of the market. The main fear of FDI in retail trade is that it will certainly disrupt the livelihood of the poor people engaged in this trade. The opening of big markets or foreign-sponsored departmental outlets will not necessarily absorb them; rather they may try to establish the monopoly power in the country. Challenges to the retail trade in general include, geographically dispersed population, complex distribution network, little use of IT systems, limitations of mass media and existence of counterfeit goods. FDI is a major source of external finance which means that countries with limited amounts of capital can receive finance beyond national borders from wealthier countries. Until 2011, Indian government denied foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail, forbidding foreign groups from any ownership in supermarkets, convenience stores or any retail outlets. But, single-brand retail was limited to 51 percent ownership with government approval. But now, the government continues the hold on retail reforms for multi-brand stores.
