Annotated Bibliography On Gender Inequality
Even the most progressive of societies are not free from gender inequality and discrimination. Despite the long fight and victories for gender equality in many cultures, there is still a long way to go. The long road is built by the cultures themselves, which have continued to perpetuate gender discrimination. They are built by institutions such as education, family, and also in the workplace.
One such institution that keeps gender discrimination alive and well is within the schools. A study done in Italy shows that while there has been progress made for equality, the school materials for the curriculum have not been addressed, especially in the government. In Anna Kågesten’s research article, “Understanding Factors that Shape Gender Attitudes in Early Adolescence Globally: A Mixed-Methods Systematic Review,” it finds that in studies from Europe, North America and sub-Saharan Africa, that with great puberty comes great gender expectations. It states in the article that “boys are expected to prove their masculine toughness and sexual prowess whereas girls are expected to hide their developing body and are increasingly restricted, as parents and others in girls’ social environments monitor and limit their mobility and freedom as ways to protect their bodies” (Kågesten, pg. 22). Stereotypes affect both males and females. Both are expected to meet expectations that restrict them. Girls are expected to be pretty yet hide themselves and also be submissive to males. Boys are expected to engage in more physical and technical activities, and being “tough.” Even if someone was against the limiting expectations, they still adhered to
