Ankle Taping Outline
1. Pre-wrap ankle
a. Mid-foot to the base of the calf
b. Cover the entire ankle
2. Anchor Strips
a. 3-4 angled strips
b. Start at base of the calf
c. Not too tight
d. 1-2 anchors on the midfoot region
e. No farther down than the base of 5th
3. Figure 8
a. Start at lateral malleolus
b. Across dorsum of the foot through medial long. arch
c. Proximal to base of 5th metatarsal
d. Back across dorsum of the foot and around medial malleolus
e. Around posterior ankle back to starting position at lateral malleolus
4. Stirrups
a. Start along medial aspect of lower leg at anchor strips.
b. Proceed distal across medial malleolus and pull under the heel.
c. Finish on the lateral aspect at the anchor strips
d. Complete 3 of these overlapping the tape by ½ the width of the previous piece
5. Stirrup Anchor Strips
a. Start at superior aspect of stirrup strips
b. Apply 3 anchor strips over the stirrups.
c. These strips should be mirror images of starting anchor strips
6. Horseshoes
a. Place a horizontal strip from the medial malleolus running posterior to the lateral malleolus
b. Complete 3 of these overlapping the tape by ½ the width of the previous piece
7. Heel Locks
a. Start along dorsum of the foot at the base of the 5th metatarsal
b. Proceed along dorsum of the foot through the medial long. arch and across plantar surface of the foot.
c. Pull upwards along the lateral aspect of the calcaneus distal to the lateral malleolus.
d. Continue posteriorly around the lower leg and around the medial malleolus.
e. Go across the anterior aspect of the lower leg and around the lateral malleolus continuing posteriorly around the lower leg again.
f. Pull downwards along the medial aspect of the calcaneus distal to the medial malleolus.
g. Continue across the plantar aspect of the foot and distal to the base of the 5th metatarsal.
h. Pull upwards across the dorsum of the foot and end at the medial malleolus.
