Servant leadership is an effective style of leadership for the hospitality industry

This essay will outline what are the qualities of a good leader. It will further describe and define the term of Servant Leadership together with its main characteristics and its importance for the subordinates within the working environment. Moreover, this essay will argue if the servant leader is actually an effective style of leadership. The essay will question the servant leader’s concentration towards its own vision and subordinates wellbeing instead of the organisation’s objectives. Additionally, the essay will discuss the need of servant leadership within the hospitality industry as well as the importance of ethical leadership and trust between managers and their subordinates. The essay will compare the transformational and servant leadership approach defining the differences between both. Lastly, this essay will conclude whether servant leadership is effectiveness within hospitality organisations.
Research of Andersen (2009) indicates that subordinates want to have a manager who is concerned about their needs, wants and aspirations. A manager who will empower workers, support their development and promote them. Subordinates want managers that are sensitive to their needs and problems. Mullins (2001) found that an effective leader will have the ability to motivate and inspire workers throughout the organisation’s vision and aspirations. Additionally, Saunders (2004) stated that leader will have particular qualities and characteristics that will help to influence others and lead the team. Saunders claims that in order to achieve the company‘s goal, the leader needs to have subordinates who will follow. Moreover, research of Armstrong (2008) indicates that a good leader will be; confident, kind and caring yet tough and firm.
Study of Greenleaf (1970) indicates that a servant leader is the type of leader who is mainly concerned about the comfort
