Andy Punishment The Duvitches
When Andy and Tom throw their bar of soap into the Duvitches tub of fish, poisoning them all they are given the punishment from their father of going in the lake and catching 61 fish, the same amount the Duvitches had caught within the day. Andy’s father was right to give his boys such a tough punishment because this punishment allowed his boys to look at what they did in a new way. His sons learned a valuable lesson after they spent their time completing their punishment. The Duvitches were a large family just trying to catch enough fish to feed their family for a period of time and Andy and his brother ruined this for them.     Dr. Rios’s purpose in writing this chapter is to convince the reader that Tyrell and Jose, as well as many other gang members, had been trapped into joining the gangs or committing criminal activity such as selling drugs to provide for themselves, since the police could not provide them with what they needed. Tyrell is the first focus of the chapter and Rios goes into detail on the Ville, which is “a low income housing project on 66th Avenue and International,” (45) known by many to be one of the most crime-ridden areas in Oakland. Tyrell talks about how his father taught him that the police were the good guys and to obey the law. Tyrell later grew up to “look like a man by age twelve,” (49) which made him a target for criminal suspicions and random checks. To see his father struggling financially as well as see himself getting stopped by the police for no reason other than his appearance, he resorted to selling drugs in order to support himself, since it “was one of the only ways he could make some money.” (50) Rios wanted to show that police were not helping him, contrary to what he was taught by his father. This lead to Tyrell having nothing to fall back on as a reliable source of help, so he had no choice but to resort to criminal activity to help support himself.…

    The home was built by slaves. They are going to be working for people. The family decided as an occupation, they were going to become tenant farmers. Sartoris and his father go to see the owner of the house and their new boss. There is a very nice house compared to their shack they will be living in, it is basically a mansion. Sartoris sees the mansion house as a good sign that everything will be just fine. He is not scared of his father hurting this type of person and burning their barn to the ground because these people are well off. Snopes purposefully walks in horse manure and walks all over a rug in the nice house, it happens to be the color white as well. Mr. de Spain is the owner of the fine house they are in. Snopes has his two daughters try to clean the rug with lye. Snopes has to take Sartoris with him to return the rug cleaned by two sisters. The owner is mean and says that the rug is ruined because of the way they cleaned it so the rug is sent back due to being messed up because they did not clean the rug properly. The rug costed 100 dollars too, so he had to pay a good amount of corn (about twenty bushels) to be able to pay for the rug he ruined on purpose. Snopes was charged for this incident, and they refused to pay the cost to them because they did not think they did anything wrong, and they thought they did everything in their power to make sure it was as clean as possible. Sartoris tried to stick up for his father this time but he was shot down by Snopes and told to leave. He was told to go back to the wagon, but he instead stayed in the store to watch as everything went down. There is then a court appearance again, and the judge thinks that the rug was burned as well as accidentally messed up and snopes emptied kerosine and had a lit candle.
