Case Background:
Andrea Jung went from being a lackluster student to attending the Ivy League’s Princeton University to going on to becoming the CEO of Avon products. Jung was born in 1959 in Toronto, Ontario Canada. She earned a bachelors degree in English literature in 1979. Recently graduated, she got a job in Bloomingdale’s as a manager in training and did so well that she moved to a job at the I. Magnin stores. From there, she went on to become the executive vice president in charge of women’s apparel, cosmetics, and accessories at Neiman Marcus.
Jung wanted a new challenge so began working for Avon Products, Inc in 1993 as a consultant. The company was ailing at the time and needed a fresh burst of life to keep it going. The leadership team at Avon liked what Jung had to offer and hired her as the President of the marketing operations in 1994. She worked on bringing modern lines into the company. For instance, she introduced the Avon apparel line, new fragrances and new slogans. Because of her hard work and continued success in reinventing the company, she became the CEO of Avon Products. She was the first female CEO in Avon’s history. Since her rise as CEO, Jung has taken Avon to higher levels. Jung was able to expand the concept worldwide; Avon was sold in over 143 countries by the early twenty-first century. In her first five years of CEO, Jung gave Avon what it needed most. One of her first moves in this new position was to fire the advertising company and start over with a new image and ad campaign. She was trying to separate Avon from the old image of the Avon lady that grandmas would buy their lipstick from, to something more hip, fresh, and modern. She cut the product catalog in half in order to eliminate products that were only available in certain regions and then she replace them with products that were available to all markets, including global markets. This change helped to provide consistency among the sales representatives that were the backbone of the company. She changed the Avon slogan to “just another Avon lady” in an attempt to rebrand the company and appeal to the younger consumers (Encyclopedia of World Biography). The CEO of Avon at that time was James E. Preston and he took note of Jung’s accomplishments and soon took her under his wing. She began presenting ideas and initiatives to the board members under his recommendation, this helped her to become better positioned within the company. Within only three short years, Andrea was given the role of head of global marketing. She was only thirty seven years old at the time…

I agree with you that Andrea Jung was very influential and charismatic. She took big steps to encourage and empower women to join the business and set foot into management. (Nahavandi, p. 209)One of the most powerful things that a leader can do is to empower their followers to achieve nothing but greatness without being intimidated by other individual’s success. Although, I wish she would have prevailed during the hard economic times and made the necessary adjustments to prevent the down fall of AVON. Maybe her primary role in the business universe was to influence us all to start treating women equally and to put more women in management positions in Fortune 500 companies.…

In 2006, the company found itself in a declining state in revenue and profits. The company’s direct-selling business was taking on great costs for a number of reasons including global legal restrictions and some dissatisfaction of the company’s representatives. Since Avon’s reliance is on its direct-selling, the earnings and representative satisfaction are essential for the success of the business. The underlying factor along with other contributing causes was that Avon had grown faster than portions of its infrastructure and talent could support. The structure, people and processes that support a $5 billion company were not necessarily a good support for the $10 billion company.…
