In the first Chapters of the book, she is depicted as wealthy. During that time, their house and land are burnt down by Tío Luis and Tío Marco. The Father (“Papa”) was killed by Bandits, never to be seen again in the book. After the disaster, the Family moves to a farm in California with the help of Abuelita, Esperanza’s Grandmother. From that point forward, they recover from their hard times by working on the farm for money.
