Analysis: The Sacralization Of Christmas
“X”-ing out X-mas: How Business is Cutting off Christmas Hey Virginia, there is more than just a Santa Claus. Nowadays, Americans have either forgotten or ignored Christmas traditions put in place over 1500 years ago. They would rather indulge in the gifts and shopping to please their family than sit back and enjoy the holiday. This new mindset has led Christmas, Hanukkah, and other seasonal festivals to lose their religious intent through the past centuries by the hands of both people and markets. The original purpose of Christmas, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, has been trampled and overshadowed by a marketeer’s interpretation of how to represent the holiday. Santa and snowmen have become the faces of Christmas, instead of the Son …show more content…
Bartunek and Do’s article "The sacralization of Christmas commerce." explains that northeastern United States settlers introduced new religions like Calvinism Protestantism to the country. Calvinism shares many traits with Christianity, but accepts the commercial world as “God’s will”. In fact, capitalism was intended to coexist alongside religion, without any conflict. (Bartunek) Calvinism being introduced to the young nation effectively corrupted Christmas. Of course, Calvinism was not the only religion integrated into the United States; major influences to Christmas came from Puritans, Anglicans, and the early American Methodists as …show more content…
At the same time that Santa permeated magazines and overshadowed Christmas, other famous figures appeared to promote the holiday. In January 1939, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was created by Robert May of Chicago. At this time, the United States still struggled to climb out of the Great Depression, and businesses scrambled to turn a profit in a floppy economy. May’s company, Montgomery Ward, commissioned him to write a quick Christmas-themed book that could cheaply and effectively win the hearts of children. With this thought in mind, May created a small book, only 89 couplets, that included borrowed lines from Clement Clarke Moore’s “A Visit from St. Nicholas” and theme’s from Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale “The Ugly Duckling”. Rudolph’s 32 page tale became a gimmick for children; a promotional gift awarded to children who visited any of the department’s 620 locations. The store gimmick worked; the department store handed out 2.4 million books in 1939 and 3.6 million in 1946. (Klein) With six million books indirectly promoting the department store, Christmas became a bigger brand in the market, at least for Montgomery Ward. The 32 page book has since been stripped and modified into a short film. Added characters in the film, like the Abominable Snowman and Hermy the Elf have altered the content of the children’s story and have added more labels for commercial markets in future years. These

Let’s face the facts…. Christmas is in December. It’s October and not even late October at the time I’m writing this; and I’m already finding this gross red and green, Christmas related, candy cane striped trash sneaking its way into all of the stores! And this is just unacceptable! I mean, it is one thing for craft stores, like Hobby Lobby, because they have all seasons all the time and just shuffle stuff to the front as it gets closer to their respective holidays, but when it comes so Sam’s Club, Walmart, Dollar General, and huge chain stores like these, there is no reason to have Christmas stuff even showing up until AT LEAST after Halloween. And even yet, what kind of nutjob puts up Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving!? I don’t even…

Skewed thoughts of how and why to celebrate Christmas has trampled the faith-based version of the holiday. In movies widely popular in the younger generation, the celebration of Christmas revolves around unrealistic traditions, such as receiving gifts from Santa and his reindeer. Reality, however, differs. Christmas should revolve less around fantasies and materialistic gifts and more toward appreciation, family, and Jesus Christ (the reason for the season). For instance, movies such as “Rudolph the Rednose Reindeer” directed by Larry Roemer and the many sequels of “Santa Claus” directed by John Pasquin have plots about elves and reindeer trying to impress Santa. Adults focus on the legend of Saint Nicholas when teaching their children about Christmas causing them to lose sight of its religious…

I think your thesis and introduction grab your reader’s attention, it sets a specific tone and allows your readers to anticipate the story of what it means to be selfless or the sacrifices made by others to enjoy Christmas. Tachala, you introduced a thesis in the introductory paragraph and reworded your thesis in the conclusion paragraph; which is great. Your narrative included a few chronological order phrases or words; keeping your readers interested in the story. However, your paper, “Christmas: A season of selflessness and Sacrifice is missing transitional words to give your ideas together. Without transitional words, your paper lacks strengthening coherence throughout the narrative. Your sensory details were well planned, I could imagine…

Christmas wasn’t always the popular holiday it is today. In fact, the well known puritans, in the 1600s actually banned it out of disgust and anger. Christmas nowadays is heralded, by most, as a joyous holiday. Those who don’t celebrate Christmas, but celebrate a different holiday around this time are still consumed by the beauty of the wintery season. However, some Americans do not celebrate Christmas- or any holidays for that matter and in fact look down on them as useless and frivolous in a Scrooge-like manner. It is perhaps from the puritans that this intolerance of holidays stems, just as the joy from Christmas comes from The Christmas Carol, by Dickens and religion. The Ban on Christmas in 17th century Puritan New England shaped the attitudes towards the…

Winston Churchill once said, “Christmas is a season not only of rejoicing but of reflection.” As the big day draws near, it is important to reflect on the roots of the global holiday as well as the direction in which it is heading. Christmas is a tradition rooted deep in the history of western society. It has undergone many changes since it’s earliest celebrations. Even today, the holiday is constantly changing. Each year brings new innovations to Christmas. In the dawn of the holiday, it was minor and focused on the birth of Jesus, the light of the world. In the 19th century, Christmas was a time of family and goodwill to mankind. Today, though there still remains aspects of religion and selflessness, more than ever it has become a holiday consumed by commercialism. It is a development that is not likely to go way any time soon.…

Dickens' The Christmas Carol is known as a cute exaltation of the Christmas ‘spirit' of charity and love for our fellow man. Almost everyone growing up as a kid has read or seen some kind of version of The Christmas Carol during the holidays in the month of December. It is a story about a tightfisted lonely man known as Scrooge who learns to give and receive love which I think we would all agree is more than appropriate for the season. But Dickens' story has more meaning and as you get deeper into the story you learn that there is a dark reflection on a changing society…
