Analysis: The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective Teens
In the novel “The 7 habits of Highly Effective Teens,” by Sean Covey, he tells us about habits and goals we should set for ourselves to become a better person. All of these habits can be applied to high school freshman. Although three habits really stood out to me, that would be useful to highschool freshman. Habit one, “ Be proactive,” habit two, “ Begin with the End in Mind,” habit three, “ Put First Things First,” could all be applied to high school freshman.

The first three habits focus on obtaining private victory, or making change within yourself, to achieve independence from dependence. The first habit to begin this transition is to be proactive. Highly effective people do not resign to the fact that there is nothing they can do about a problem or situation. The day of the eighth grade promotion was filled with mixed emotions. I was very nervous but also excited to be leaving middle school. I was mostly nervous because I would have to walk up onto the stage in front of over a hundred people. I didn’t want to go because of how nervous I was. The school day was uneventful. We went over what we were supposed to do in the gym multiple times. Even though the day was boring and uneventful, I was nervous the entire school day. In The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, Sean Covey states, “Putting first things first also deals with learning to overcome your fears and being strong during hard moments” (Covey 106). In order to overcome my fear and stay strong I had to put first things first. I was worrying…

The second goal on my list is to develop better study habits. In the my past high school years I’ve had a laid back attitude toward work that had to be done outside of school. However, I know that my past work habits are not the best approach to college courses considering the large amount of work given by the teachers. In order to achieve this goal I will have to organize my time wisely. I also would have to isolate my self in a setting where I would have zero distractions such as a public library. I need to learn to stay focused on my work and not get easily distracted by tempting games or television. I have to learn to mange my time and not procrastinate. Never put off till…

For my first goal I would like to keep my grades up. This is very important because it would help me get into my ideal college. What I have done so far is handing in all my homework and projects. I need to make a habit of studying and giving a hundred percent on my work; yes, I am doing my work but I am not always sure if it's done correctly, which could affect my performance on my tests. I have plenty of support from my friends because they are going through the same thing as I am, they have homework and tests just like me so they understand what I am going through.…

College students need to stay focused to ensure success at the next level. One needs to create a space that is quiet and has no distractions. Pick a place with no television, radio, or anything that will get ones attention. This will allow students to concentrate. Knowing when to study is a valuable part of learning. Students need to establish a routine of daily study habits. As students study, they need to take breaks. Studying for several hours at a time is not a great idea. Students need to break down studying into methods that are easiest for them. Students need to set academic goals, and once the goals are achieved reward themselves.…

Freshman year was not my best and I know I could do so much better. To avert disappointment and negativity in general, I plan to be more self-aware of significant issues and actually act for a different outcome. The Personal Skills Map helped to classify my strengths and weaknesses, and I am grateful to have such a useful tool to aid me in improving and most importantly keep moving forward. High school may be a challenging time with many expectations to adhere to, but I think it is one they key lessons to be learned (without them, what would be the point?). I will apply the quote by Rachel Wolchin, “The new year means nothing if you’re still in love with our comfort zone” to my own life in order to fulfill my…

A second piece of advice is do not let peer pressure ruin your life or friendships. A lot of people go through high school partying and doing drugs and it changes a lot of people. That is one reason a lot of friendships will end because one friend will do something that the other one does not approve of, and they will start to argue about it and just end up not being friends anymore because one decided to make a bad choice. It ruins lives because people can develop addictions to alcohol or certain drugs because of peer pressure. If you listen to a loser then you end up a loser later on so it is just best in high school to just follow what you strongly believe in, and to not be afraid to be yourself and do what you want to do. It’s your life to live, so you make your own choices. The last and final piece of advice to new freshmen would be to just have fun, do not let stupid stereotypes or people who think they are too cool tell you what to do. If you want to be a computer geek, then be a computer geek. If people say anything to you, just let it go in one ear and out the other. They…
