Analysis Of Nike's 'Risk Everything'
Nike's "Risk Everything" commercial aired two and a half years ago in anticipation for the 2014 World Cup. The purpose of Nike's ad was to show the consumer that their brand and product was superior to the competition. Nike used the enthusiasm and excitement swirling around the World Cup to appeal to the market in various different ways. The purpose of this is to show the audience that Nike's brand is capable of putting you in the place of your favorite soccer star and making you feel like one of the greats. This ad does a splendid job of targeting a wide range of people. On the surface it may look like the company is only targeting soccer players, but it could appeal to just about any athlete, or anyone who looks up to an athlete. Nike targets …show more content…
The World Cup is the largest soccer tournament in the world between national teams spanning across the globe and tends to elicit mass amounts of pride and patriotism from people rather they enjoy the sport of soccer or not. People who aren't even fans of the sport tune in just to watch and cheer for their country on the grand stage. This bodes well for Nike because millions of people who dream of becoming stars in their respective sports see this commercial during World Cup coverage and receive the message that Nike is sending to aspiring athletes. People see the ad and see the relatable characters in the commercial play with and like the best in the world and that inspires athletes of different sports to take the initiative to go "Risk Everything". This is displayed even more when you notice athletes from other sports strategically planted in the commercial. In the middle of the commercial you see Kobe Bryant make a funny comment about the game. You also see Jon Jones and Anderson Silva, two UFC fighters, fighting each other over a foul in the game. It starts out very serious with a challenge from one team to the other and they both want to win so they start out quite competitive. As the scene moves forward, dialogue starts to become more prevalent. A kid passes the ball when he's supposed to "be" Neymar and a teammate corrects his mistake. Another instance is when a player tries to mock Cristiano Ronaldo, but Ronaldo is able to one-up him at every turn. Various examples of comic relief appear throughout the ad and help ease the tension of the game. The use of Kobe Bryant in the commercial is also humorous because no one would expect him to be a soccer fan and seeing him in a soccer commercial could be a little startling to those who watch him play basketball. You could also focus on the use of the Hulk in the middle of the commercial. If Nike wanted to appeal to a population that didn't quite appreciate sports, the utilization of a superhero could at the very least entertain those who enjoy comics and marvel movies. This commercial features prominent athletes across a wide range of sports.
