The poem We Real Cool by Gwendolyn Brooks focuses on what activities the troubled group of seven teenagers partake in to make them appeal cool. The symbolism, imagery and tone shown in, “We Real Cool” shows how losing one’s identity to become part of a uncaring group in adolescence and social norms will lead one to an early visit to the grave. Gwendolyn uses symbolism throughout her poem to get the readers to perceive the poem in an abstract way. In the subtitle, the word “golden” symbolises daytime and youth. This becomes an ironic name for the pool, because the wandering, carefree lives of the “pool players” seem to be anything but “golden” (line 1). By saying that the seven men “Lurk late,” the poem suggests that they are wandering around…

If you compare the two poems “Casey at the Bat” and “David and the Goliath”, you will find some differences and similarities between the two. The first similarity between the two is that they both had faith that they would achieve their goal. In verse 36 David states “Sir, I have killed lions and bears that way, and I can kill this worthless Philistine”. This shows that David has killed many animals and it will not be different from killing the giant. In line 30 of Casey at the Bat it states “And Casey stood a–watching it in haughty grandeur there”. This means that Casey looked at the pitcher like he was too good for the pitch. The next similarity is that they had to face big problems. In Casey at the Bat on line 43 and 44 it says “They saw…

In “Mnemonic” by Li-Young Lee a man is looking back on his life while falling asleep. He tries to recall the memory of his father and his blue sweater. He remembers his father wrapping him in the blue sweater when he was cold, but he never gives the sweater back. The boy fondly remembers his father and all the love his father had for him, and the first sign of regret is seen. The sweater is a symbol of love from father to son but the love was unrequited and the boy, now a man, wants nothing more than to show his father how much he loves him. The man’s loving memory quickly shifts to one of disappointment. He recalls his father’s memory and how complex it was, saying that he was “A man who forgot nothing” (l 13). He then thinks of his own memory saying “ There is no order / to my memory, a heap / of…

Throughout the story, At the Pitt-Rivers, the narrator analyses a “couple” in the museum. He observes the way the couple act around each other and how they communicate. When the narrator first spots the young woman, he observes her and her physical appearance: “The girl was definitely not attractive … she hadn’t got a nice figure; her legs were kind of dumpy and she didn’t have pretty hair or anything like that” (Lively 24). Right off the bat, the narrator judges the woman for not being attractive whatsoever. However, the narrator goes on for being misconstrued: “She still wasn’t pretty, but she had the most beautiful expression I’ve ever seen in my life” (Lively 25). The narrator is stating how, even though this woman may be unattractive, she has the most beautiful expression ever. Later on, the narrator realizes that the reason why she lights up so much and gives off this beautiful array of expression, is because of the man she is with. At this point, the narrator recognizes that the man may be in a relationship with the woman and eventually concludes that they are.…

In the "Silver" the speaker is talking in first person. The speaker is bewildered as they witness the personified moon changing everything into silver. The speaker watches as not only does the moon shine its light on everything in the night, but also evolves the essence of nature and shrouds it in a blanket of gleaming silver changing its appearance. The line “silver reeds in a sliver stream” shows this silver effect of the moon. This particular line is also an example of the assonance of the "s" sound the author uses to create a mystical and lonely mood for the reader that captivates their imagination.…

The poem “Sympathy” by Paul Laurence Dunbar and “Caged Bird” by Maya Angelou are quite similar. Both of the poems are focused on this birds will to be free. They use a caged bird as a symbol. This is represented in Dunbar’s poem, “But a prayer that he sends from his heart’s deep core” (19). The bird’s singing is shown as a way for the bird to cope and pray. The authors relate personally to these birds as a representation for their desire of freedom and success.…
