An Essay On Geronimo Leadership Style
Geronimo is the most famous Apache Indian warrior. He was the leader of the smallest band of the Chiricahua Apache tribe, the Bedonkohe from Arizona. Geronimo was the toughest Apache Indian that the United States had to face. He was very strong and would not hesitate to put up a fight. He led and helped carry out numerous raids and stood for everything his tribe believed. Many even called him the ideal leader because of his loyalty. Geronimo became the famous Apache leader everyone knows him as in the last years of his life.
Geronimo was born on June 16, 1829 in the upper Gila River valley in Arizona. He was born to Taklishim and Juana. Geronimo’s birth name is actually Goyahkla or Goyathlay, which means ‘to yawn’ or ‘one who yawns’. As a young child, many believed he was naturally skilled at hunting, he was reported to have eaten the heart of his first kill. Geronimo lost his father shortly into his teenage years and had to take over his household. Towards the end of his teenage years, at age seventeen, Geronimo had already led four raids. There are different speculations as to how he died, one being that he passed from pneumonia, and the other being that he was thrown from his horse. The supposed death of being thrown from his horse was that Geronimo was riding home and his horse threw him, harshly injuring him to the point of hardly being able to move. He was supposedly found the next day by a friend, but by then it was too late, he had spent all night in the cold and his health was very poor. He was said to have died six days after being found. One of Geronimo’s quotes on his deathbed was about his regret of surrendering, “I should have never surrendered, I should have fought until I was the last man alive.” Geronimo was buried at the Fort Sill cemetery for Apache
