An Argument In Favor Of Thanksgiving Day
Thanksgiving. On Thanksgiving, many people don't even think about the Native Americans. Most people are all happy and smiley and thanking the Pilgrims for starting this glorious day. The truth is, those people should all be ashamed of themselves. Thanksgiving was started by the Native Americans, therefore, it should honor the natives. As of now, Thanksgiving has no relation to the Natives, gives no honer to the Natives, and gives them no credit for starting the holiday. Because of this problem, I have come up with a proposal… to rename Thanksgiving to Native Thanks Day.

I think that we should rename Thanksgiving to honor the Native Americans. Right now, Thanksgiving gives all its honor to the Pilgrims and does not leave any to the Natives.

    Just recently I saw a video of Native Americans holding up picket signs saying that Columbus was a mass murderer and that he had Indian blood on his hands. Native Americans have existed here in America well before Columbus landed on Plymouth Rock. I never knew the full history of Native Americans until now. Native Americans have many different privileges set aside for them, some are inaccurate and some are not. Things that I’ve heard include; if you can prove you are part Indian the American government will give you a check for the past wrong doings their culture endured, Indians are allowed to go to college for a free education, and Indians are the only ones who can open and run casinos or gambling venues. Most television shows that I watch always depict Native Americans as abiding by their own laws and government without interference from any American legal agency. Showing that if a local police department had any concern for looking for a person of interest on a Native American reservation, then they had to have the permission of that reservations police department because they are a separate entity. I’ve always wondered, what the story behind the reason for the separation was and why the laws were set aside for them. I knew that Columbus came and had taken land from them, but had no idea that it was the Colonists coming over from Europe in shiploads that were replacing many Indian homes and causing battles with them and enslaving them for labor while bringing over diseases that almost wiped out their population. I now feel that there should not be just a Christopher Columbus Day, but instead a day that recognizes Christopher Columbus’s long journey and the Native Americans great history and accomplishments before he arrived, including the battles they suffered after his arrival.…

    Whether directly or indirectly, Columbus caused a mass genocide to the people of Haiti when he voyaged to the west (Source 4). Without any concern for the Native American lifestyle, Columbus plowed through the seas and reduced population of tribe after tribe. Why should America attribute a day of gratitude to this man, who caused genocide in days? However, Columbus is also held accountable for direct and purposeful cruelty and abuse to the Natives of the lands. Columbus wanted the Natives to work for him, and when he was met with resistance, he used force. Columbus released hounds, greyhounds, and more ferocious beasts on the Native Americans in order to force them to do his bidding (Source 4). Natives were torn apart and crippled because of Columbus’s greed and abuse. In addition to forcing people to his will, Columbus had a certain standard for the Native Americans which had to be met. Columbus encouraged his men to rape young Native women, just to instill power and dominance (Source 4). If the Natives were not able to bring in their daily quota of gold dust, “they had their hands cut off… When their cries kept Spaniards awake, they were silenced with wooden slats put over their tongues” (Source 1). Columbus’s abuse eventually led to Natives killing themselves with poison rather than endure Columbus’s torture (Source 1).
