Book Review for American Sniper – By: Chris Kyle (Autobiography)

Before I start my book review, I would like to show respect to Chris Kyle, who died in an incident that occurred at a gun range in Erath County, Texas, where he and his good friend Chad Littlefield, were slain by a retired soldier “supposedly”, suffering from PTSD. I greatly appreciate his dedication and time spent protecting the United States of America.

Overview: Chris Kyle, also known by his enemies as “the devil of Ramadi”, is the most lethal sniper to ever go through the U.S. Military. With over 150 confirmed kills (over 250 total kills unconfirmed), Chris holds the record for most confirmed kills. American Sniper is an autobiography about his life before, getting into, and time in the military. He also writes of his life outside of the military, and his wife Taya even writes which gives you an opposing look from a family member’s view of a loved one at war.

Opinion: I loved the book. Definitely the best autobiography I have ever read. It just captured my attention right from the beginning, and kept it throughout the entire book. The description Chris puts into each scenario is immaculate. His first person imagery is amazing and it feels as if you’re sitting right next to him watching each and every little detail unfold before you. “Tony shot the driver in the head. The vehicle veered and crashed into another building nearby. A helo came in a short while later and blew up the truck. A Hellfire missile whooshed in, and the dump truck erupted: it had been filled with explosives” (Kyle 284). This is probably my favorite book.

Theme: The concept of the book I think, is to capture, and show true life of a marine. Reading the autobiography of such a notable character in military history, leaves an effect on you. It portrays how everyday people, with a little determination, can achieve such a feat and accomplish their dream. It shows the

War has no boundaries like age, family, and time of day. In the story,”The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty a sniper is stationed on a rooftop near O’Connell Bridge and is tasked to “take out” any hostiles. While staking out, the sniper got shot in the arm by a fellow sniper and is faced many challenges in order to survive. Despite the Sniper’s skill, the sniper is realizing how war shows no mercy. When O’Flaherty wrote,“He paused for a moment, considering whether he should risk a smoke. . . He decided to take the risk . . . Almost immediately, a bullet flattened itself against the parapet of the roof.” Because war waits for no one, the sniper had to consider the consequences of smoking before he smoked. This shows how brutal war is, someone can’t…

The movie, American Sniper, has definitely been one of the most anticipated and controversial films of 2014. The movie is directed by Clint Eastwood, and stars Bradley Cooper. This movie tells the unique and complicated story of former navy seal, Chris Kyle. Chris Kyle is mostly known as the most lethal sniper in U.S military history. Chris had 160 confirmed kills in total of all of his tours of duty. Unfortunately, Chris Kyle was killed at a gun range by a former marine who had a history of mental illness. Chris Kyle released a book called “American Sniper,” which later developed into a film. The movie was made in memory of him and to tell his story. This movie is a very touching war film. The care and passion that was put into this movie is clearly shown through the acting, cinematography, realistic war scenes, and dedication from the actors. This movie not only speaks to those who loved Chris Kyle, but also to those who have family members serving or have served in the U.S. Military. Clint Eastwood makes sure that those who served are properly respected and honored for their service. This is why the movie is a great film…

I loved this book. Out of all the books that I have read of Chris Crutcher, this one is definitely my favorite. The reason I liked it so much is because it’s realistic and moving. It shows how even though things can get tough and almost seem impossible, with dedication and support you can pull through. I recommend this book to…

Clint Eastwood’s critical, box office and Academy Awards juggernaut tells the tale of Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper), a prolific, er, American sniper, and his endeavours on and off the battlefield during the Iraq war. It’s a heavily lethargic adaptation of a heavily controversial book about a heavily divisive ‘American Hero’. Not to say that the flick itself is wildly patriotic – though the ending tries its best to disprove that – but nor is it an anti-war film, as director Eastwood haplessly attempts to argue. Which is where American Sniper’s greatest fault, among many faults, lies; it’s a film that is too afraid to carry any political heft, any commentary that would make the viewing experience worthwhile. As a result, the whole point of the film is rendered null.…

In the first novel I read, American Sniper, it was an autobiography about a Navy SEAL sniper. The book ends with Chris Kyle going home. The novel also has articles in the back about how Chris Kyle was shot and killed in the United States by a mantel veteran. In the novel, Dark Places, Libby’s brother murdered her family and she meets a group that says otherwise. The three main searches for the novel Dark Places are survival after the murder of Libby’s family, the depression that follows, and the redress for Libby’s brother.…

Liam O’Flaherty’s splendid short story, “The Sniper”, demonstrated superb suspense throughout the entire story. Several different lively, tension-filled moments riddled this story. First off, in the beginning, the sniper is laying in his covert hideout with his rifle. He decides to light his cigarette because he fancies a smoke. The light gives his position away and the soldier is shot at from an enemy sniper. In this moment Liam, the author, creates a nervous tension in the audience because the intelligent readers know it’s a bad idea. It’s obvious that the not-so-sneaky sniper would reveal his furtive position, thus becoming a target and receiving enemy fire. Consequently, these unfortunate events happen. Anon an armored enemy vehicle lumbers…

This book is about 1stSgt. Kasal’s life leading up to his most honorable moment while in the battle of Fallujah. The book starts out by telling how 1stSgt. Kasal grew up in Afton, Iowa. He grew up on farm like most other families in his hometown. But with farming becoming obsolete in the shadow of large corporations, Brad Kasal already knew by junior high that he didn’t want to slave on a farm to barely scrape by like his father. He already had the Marine Corps in his sights. January 1984, Kasal left his hometown of Afton, Iowa and got a plane destined for MCRD, San Diego. Kasal shined right away and became a squad leader and was meritoriously promoted to Private First Class by graduation and instructed that he was going to indeed be a grunt like he wanted. After graduating as the honor graduate in School of Infantry, Kasal was stationed on Camp Pendleton with 2nd battalion, 1st marine regiment. He was a PFC in Weapons Co. as a Dragon gunner. Two months after checking in with his unit, Kasal was again meritoriously promoted. Kasal’s first deployed to the Western Pacific on a Marine Expeditionary Unit in June 1986. Shortly after he would win an NCO of the quarter award and once again get another meritorious promotion. Kasal throughout his career would consistently pick up meritorious promotions all the way to Sergeant Major. By March of 2003 when Operation Iraqi Freedom started, Kasal was 1stSgt of Kilo Co. 3d Battalion, First Marine Regiment. While still 1stSgt of Kilo, they were part of the second attempt to take back Fallujah in November of 2004. The mission was to take back Fallujah by getting rid of any insurgents left in the city. Because there were innocents still within the city limits, rules of engagement meant to not fire unless fired upon or if the enemy is seen with a weapon. This made things very difficult. It would have been very bad politically to go in and just blow up everything that moved, so instead…

The first chapter is titled Ethos, which describes to the reader what it is that makes a Marine, and leading Marines, different from every other walk of life. Being a Marine a full-time gig, never a part-time mindset or a paycheck. When Marines do things in the civilian world, they often hear statements like "that's such a Marine thing to do", or "only a Marine..." This is because Marines have a special way of going about things, a different way of looking at life and all it entails. Young people join the Marines because they want to be different, because they want to stand out. Marines desire the challenge and all that comes with it, because it is under these conditions that we form the cherished and unbreakable elitists mindset and sense of brotherhood so well adorned by the Corp. All Marines wear the title Marine as…

The history of war is what many spend time reading about in textbooks. Few, however, experience war and all that it encompasses. David Leckie, a marine during World War II, uses his book, Helmet for My Pillow, to share with readers the truth of what it was like to be a soldier. Rather than skimming the surface of his time on Parris Island and the Pacific Islands, he goes into unmatched, excruciating detail; every trench dug, every shot fired, and every fallen soldier passed was recounted by Leckie. Setting this story apart from any other, the first-hand accounts of combat, unlikely descriptions of the day-to-day actions of the soldiers, and the heart that Leckie intertwines with each part of his story all combine to make this thought-provoking,…
