The two main characters are Tom Hanks playing Captain John H. Miller and Matt Damon playing James Francis Ryan. Their roles are by far the most significant because if it weren’t for Captain Miller, Private Ryan may not have had the chance to carry on his family legacy since his three brothers were all gone. Captain Miller is a selfless, brave man who was determined to serve justice no matter where he went. James Francis Ryan notices Captain Miller’s virtues and carries them on the rest of life to make Captain proud for all he did for him.…

The film shows the Vietnam experience from the average soldier 's point of view. In the beginning Chris Taylor is very ignorant and his chances of survival are slim. The movie went beyond just showing battles, with the showing of the moral dilemmas that the soldiers faced. The film does not in any way glorify the war in Vietnam. It is a gritty look at what the soldiers endured while serving their country. The men in the platoon come from all walks of life and all over the country. However they all share the same desire to serve their time and get as far away from the fighting as possible. There is not one soldier in the jungle whose mind is not irrevocably warped by the ravages of war. Some critics complain that the character development in the story is weak and there is no plot. J.P. Stern of U S News and World Report states that "The Central Plot tension - the battle for a young private 's soul between a "good" sergeant who has retained humanity and a "bad" sergeant who has become a killing machine is not very tense." However, the introduction of the entire cast in the film is what sets the film apart from others like it. There are no real heroes in this movie and no real villains. There is just a group of frightened men fighting for survival in their own ways and counting the days until they can leave the…

I believe that every one thinking about joining the military should definitely consider watching the film Platoon for multiple reasons. The first reason is that at the beginning of the movie Taylor walks by body bags and they say “is that what I think it is” that shows him how real of a situation he is in. A life or death situation. The movie also shows characters having major psychological problems when going through and after the war. The soldiers thought it was okay that they were going to rape a female. Their minds were screwed up from the war to tell them whats right and wrong. Another realization of the movie is when the Junior was supposed to keep watch and Taylor woke up noticing the enemy getting closer and this just shows how you…

The movie I chose to view for the first time is the American war film Lone Survivor, written and directed by Peter Berg starring Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, Ben Foster, and Erica Bana. It is based on the nonfiction book “Lone Survivor” by Marcus Lutrell and Patrick Robinson about a war in Afghanistan where the United States Navy Seals counter-insurgent mission Operation Red wings failed and four-men Seal reconnaissance and surveillance team were tasked to track down Taliban leader Ahmad Shah. Shah had killed over twenty United States marines, as well as refugees and villagers, that’s when four United States navy seals went on the their mission which was Leader Micheal P. “Murph” Murphy,…

Saving Private Ryan tells the story of 8 young soldiers who risk their own lives in order to save the life of one man. The first 20 minutes of the film is the most effective in illustrating the horrific conditions and images troops are subjected to. The opening scene being hailed as the most realistic interpretation of war is only enhanced by the use of a hand held camera that provides the audience with a view of war through a soldier’s eye, as well as adding to the chaos and confusion surrounding them. With the constant sound effects of machine guns, shells and screams for help played throughout the movie and the use of silence when Captain Miller is defended by a shell, allows the audience to get an idea of the mental and physical hardship troops are exposed to and the difficulty they would encounter to overcome these problems. A strong message displayed in the film is that of loyalty, sacrifice and mateship. 8 men sacrifice their lives to save a man that they had never even heard of. Sharing a bond that only other troops would understand, they make their way across the country to find Private Ryan. Once found, Private Ryan refuses to leave as he believes his life is no greater than the soldiers he has been fighting with. He is not willing to leave until his mission is complete. This shows enormous sacrifice, not only by the men who found Ryan, but Ryan himself for not wanting to leave his fellow soldiers in their time of need.…

Wars can either tear friends and family apart or bring them close together. In “The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty, the sniper faces a surprise after deciding to go look at the enemy sniper. In “Cranes” by Hwang Sunwon, Songsam takes Tokchae to get killed and towards the end, he frees Tokchae. The theme is the central idea or insight about life that a story reveals. The theme of “The Sniper” is that war separates families; the theme of “Cranes” is that war cannot tear friendships apart. These two themes have differences and similarities.…

This movie’s level of ambition was that of a typical Clint Eastwood film, straightforward, deep and controversial. Clint Eastwood is known through his characters as the hard, smart talking, no nonsense, afraid of nothing type casted actor and so his films that are directed by him bring a whole new level to that type of character. He brings the softer side to these characters that we do not expect to see. He reveals the inner dilemma within his character to show that just because someone has done some really horrible things in their lives that does not mean that they do not have internal struggles between what is right and what is wrong.…

Within every man resides good and evil; which quality manifests itself is determined by how one is raised and views the world. Stanley Kubrick's film Full Metal Jacket takes the concept of good or evil in man and shows how war, the marines, and government blur soldiers' ideas of right or wrong. By injection of propaganda from these sources a misidentity is created within the solider. Once this misidentity has taken place it is the soldiers' job to figure out what he is: a killing machine as he has been trained, or a bringer of peace to a war torn nation.…

According to his wife Taya Kyle, “If there was ever going to be a movie that was even going to come close to getting it right, this was it”, Jon Anderson, ‘American Sniper’ widow says the film gets it right, (USA Today, 2014) , 2. Taya also says, “I left feeling like a weight had been lifted. They really pulled it off. It's an authentic, genuine look at two people who love each other and what our veterans go through and what they carry ... how they take their home life to the battlefield and take the battlefield home.” If his own wife is saying that the film is accurate to his story, the film must be accurate to his story. She is the one person who understood Kyle’s story just as well because she was a major part of it. The film also helped her heal after his sudden death. I was very moved by his story and felt that I learned a lot about the Iraq war, how war impacts individuals, and how war impacts family members. His legacy will be remembered for the modern American Hero he was and how he put other individuals and his country before…
