In retrospect, Internet could be a double-edged sword. On one hand, Internet might have the capability to bring positive impact on human development. On the other hand, the rise of Internet has also transported undesirable impacts to human society, like the emergence of cyber bullying.
In the first place, I believe that one of the most harmful effects of Internet is its instant effect. As technology improves, Internet gives an instant effect for bullies to attack their targets. This new form of bullying could be measured as cyber bullying. In some ways, online bullying may differ from the traditional bullying. The most noticeable is that victims and bullies are interconnected through networking, which is Internet. Online bullying might turn out to be more abusive than the traditional bullying because it is not limited to specific places. In consideration at the impact of globalization, we can perceive that Internet is opened for anyone from any places throughout the world. In other words, the improvement of technology has comprised Internet is ‘borderless’ in terms of information and technology. (York, 2015). The impact of Internet has made the perpetrators of online bullying is difficult to trace or discover. As a result, bullies feel safe if they do not give a true personal identification. As earlier mentioned, one of the appeals of Internet is that cyber bullies could bully their victims without revealing their true identity. In this way, with the Internet protection, the victims might have no idea who is harassing them. Knowing that their victims cannot identify their identity has encouraged cyber bullies to be more aggressive and abusive than what they do in face-to-face encounter. A study conducted by Slonje et al (2012) has shown that bully offender feel less regret when they cannot see their victims’ reaction due to the anonymity feature. The online buddies have underestimated the impact of bullying on their victims. In my opinion, the existence of Internet has led cyber bullying to become more dangerous day by day. Digital technology has facilitated irresponsible people to attack others. We can see that Internet is the platform for someone to spread lies, attack, and hoax. The
