Evaluation of Honor
All over the world people have hungered for one thing Respect. Everyone wants respect, the poor, the rich, the strong, the frail, whole countries in fact; people will stop at nothing to be respected or rather honored. Honor and respect are like brothers, sharing many of the same qualities and morals for you give respect to those that deserve to be honored. Honor is purchased by the deeds we do, by being “trustworthy, loyal, helpful, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent”(scout law), we earn honor.

In the article manly Honor Part V: Honor in the American South, McKay writes, “The code of honor is [...] a reputation for martial courage and strength, [...] a willingness to use violence to defend any perceived slight to his reputation as a man of integrity, strength, and courage, as well as any threats to his independence and kin. Just as in medieval times, “might made right” in the American South. If a man could physically dominate [..] someone who accused him of dishonesty, that man maintained his reputation as a man of integrity (even if the accusations were in fact true)” (Art of Manliness). In other words, Honor is a lifestyle rather than a description. For Americans Honor is heroics, defending himself and others. In the article Medal of honor, Peter Roper writes about the history of meaning of the united states’ medal of honor, saying , “The Medal of Honor would only be awarded for actions "above and beyond the call of duty" and in actual combat”(Home of Heroes). This also means that, Americans value heroics so much as to create a metal full of esteem and glory to honor those Americans that deserve it. Greece a place full of rich history and beautiful monuments to said history, for example, has a slightly different usage of the word honor. In a study called Respect and honor in Greek culture it reads, “honor in Greek society is family honor. Family honor can be destroyed by one member, because individuals actions are seen as a reflection of the entire family, thus it is important to uphold a personal standard that will not decrease family honor”(world press). Form this passage it can be made known that, greek honor is based heavily on that of the group as a whole rather than on the individual. With this specific breed of honor we can see that it is important to be unified as a party toward a common good rather than an individual focusing on his own pride and power. In the same article as stated above the author compares greece to other cultures saying, “The Greek idea of honor is [..] seen as honor for a group, unlike the United States which classifies honor as individual through medals, and awards.”(world press). That is to say that the two cultures bass honor on completely different terms, neither one is wrong but rather both could learn something from the other. Americans could benefit from focusing on the success of the whole rather than one's individual power, and the
