Tale Of Two Cities Honor Quotes
As renaissance politician Niccolo Machiavelli says “It is not titles that honor men, but men that honor titles. In A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, honor is portrayed through the characters Charles Darnay, Lucie Manette, and Sydney Carton. The definition of honor is high respect; esteem. Charles Darnay is honorable for refusing to become the Marquis. Lucie Manette shows a great deal of honor towards her father, Dr. Manette and Sydney Carton is particularly honorable to Lucie Manette. Honor is an intangible object that must be earned, not given. Honor is far more valuable than wealth could ever be. Charles Darnay shows an immense amount of honor in this book, starting with him refusing to be the Marquis. Though this action seems to be a bit dishonorable, he refused the position for honorable reasons. He claims to his uncle that his family “..whose honour is of so much account to both of us, in such different ways...we did a world of wrong”(Dickens 128). Darnay knows the terrible actions that have taken place while his family was in ruling, and honorably refuses to take part in these same actions. Lucie’s father, Dr. Manette was released from prison after eighteen years and had no family left to turn to but Lucie. Lucie hardly knew her father, for he was in prison for most of her life. In fact she thought he was dead for those eighteen years. She still took the responsibility of trying to retrieve him to or near his original state and push him back on his feet. Her connection with her father is also extremely strong. Even when she decides to invite new people into her life she says “If I had never seen Charles, my father, I should have been quite happy with you” (Dickens 188). Absolutely nothing could break the bond that Lucie has with her father and she will apparently always treat him with the utmost honor in her
