Lily responded with a bold “you don’t scare me” (Kidd 38) She may as well have set a bomb off. T-Ray whirled around, and swung at Lily. She ducked, and he totally missed, however this did not stop him. Lily screamed at him that “[her] mother will never let [him] touch her” After a while of arguing, T-Ray told Lily the worst thing she could possibly hear. He yelled “The truth is, your sorry mother ran off and left you. The day she died, she’d come back to get her things, that’s all. You can hate me all you want, but she’s the one who left you.” (Kidd 39) This was groundbreaking for Lily. Her whole life, she thought her mother had just been cleaning out the closet, and to hear that she was really leaving was devastating. Lily always found comfort in the idea that her mother had loved her, unlike her father. Finding out this was not true caused her to cry and cry and cry. After hours of crying, Lily convinced herself that T-Ray was lying as a way to punish her. Still, there were so many unanswered questions. This was the last straw. She packed a few of her most important things, and decided she was leaving home. She was going to go sneak Rosaline out of jail, and set off to Tiburon, where she thought valuable information about her mother…

In the novel, it explores the importance of the truth, forgiveness and accepting reality. The author reveals how people struggle with pain and disappointment but eventually find a way to learn from those mistakes and move forward with an open mind. Some people don’t have the ability to face the facts, or the good and bad in life. Sue Monk Kidd demonstrates how hard it can be when people do not want to accept the truth. The author uses Lily Owens to demonstrate this difficulty, when she says, “I do, I hate her. She wasn’t anything like I thought she was. It was easy for her to leave me, because she never wanted me in the first place” (Kidd pg.251-252). Lily states this because August is the only one who knows the story about Lily’s mother, she’s also the one who tells her the truth. When Lily finds out the story that her mother left her and ran away, she’s left in shock. This implies that the truth may hurt no matter how many lies you tell yourself, the truth will always be the truth, in addition there is nothing people can do to change it. August…

Immediately upon walking through the elegant double doors, the sweet aroma of butter envelopes the air around me causing me to rapidly salivate. The smell of nacho cheese accompanies the butter fragrance and I quickly begin to picture the many tasty treats behind the square concession area that is located in front of me. Candy galore is perfectly aligned behind the glass case further enticing my taste buds. A perfect temperature keeps me comfortable and makes me wish my home's temperature could be this perfect. One well groomed attendant generously overfills a striped bag with freshly popped popcorn and delicately hands it to a young boy standing next to his mother. Colorful posters line the walls around me, showing a glimpse into what lies behind the doors located down the hallways. The softness of the bench I am sitting on causes me to wonder if I am perched upon a cloud. Intermittent bursts of laughter can be heard coming from down the long hallways as well as in the lobby creating an atmosphere of endless fun. Smiling faces of children, teenagers, and adults quickly pass by me and I can hear the attendant quickly tear their perforated tickets as he happily says, "To the left, third door on your right."…

She sat down on the pavement outside the building. It was a little dirty and the remnants of cigarettes surrounded her. Maybe she should've been sad right then. Maybe. She wasn't, not really. She had spent a long time being sad and avoiding her mom. She didn't want to avoid her anymore. She didn't want to hate vanilla. She didn't want to avoid the now vacant bakery on her way to work.…

The dining area of Rocking Horse Ranch was always hot and crowded during meal times, where the tired, overworked servers would bustle around attempting to provide excellent customer service for each and every inane request from the guests. I’ve heard that loud, hectic, quick-paced atmospheres filled with pretentious parents and scrambling children are almost calming sometimes. This atmosphere never brought me serenity; it gave me anxiety and stressed me out. Just the thought of sweeping melted ice cream cones off of the stained carpet and dry mopping the tiles floors gives me nightmares.…

I push the door open. The bell tinkles, with a soft but shrill ring. A wave of rubber gloves and disinfectant masked with cheap air freshener washes over me. Chairs are cluttered in the waiting room of the dentists. Clusters of magazines lie on the scratched wood of the coffee tables, shiny bright plastic screaming out logos and slogans. A little way forward from where I stand is a desk. A smiling receptionist sits there. She seems to have been expecting me somehow, as she indicates to the couches and chairs.…
