All Summer In A Day Summary

Every story has a clever theme that is dispersed throughout to educate the readers of main issues in our world today. One substantial example of this is Ray Bradbury's story, “All Summer In a Day”. In this story, young Margot from planet Earth tries to adapt to life on Venus, but there are roadblocks in her path that prevent her from having a decent time, which are her classmates. Each and every one of them made sure that Margot would suffer the pain they went through: not being able to see the sun. While Margot lived on Earth for four years and got to experience the bright and beautiful sun, her classmates have lived on Venus for their whole lives, and could barely recall the time where they saw this rare event occur. In the text it says, “They surged her, caught her up and bore her, protesting, and then crying, back into a tunnel, a room, a closet, where they slammed and locked the door...They heard her muffled cries. Then, smiling, they turned and went out and back down the tunnel, just as the teacher arrived.” These lines in the story thoroughly describe how Margot's fellow classmates were deeply ignorant of her and locked her up so that she couldn't see what she had been waiting for, just to torture her. At this moment, the children were not aware of their actions, and jealousy overtook them, which caused them to create tension. Relating to this, they even smiled as they walked away from what they thought was their “victory”. This is significant to the theme because the classmates thought it was a good idea to ruin Margot's happiness in order to gain their own back. Margot, as well as everyone else, had been waiting for the moment when the sun would come out, but it didn't work out well since everyone became an automatic enemy towards this innocent girl. Although, one can see why these children are acting this way. Not being able to experience something someone else experienced could be a whole lot to take in, and hard to handle. Thunder started clashing and rain started pouring, causing an automatic shift in everyone's mood. Seeing and feeling the warmth of the bright yellow sun changed the children completely, and was something they would never let go. Though, when it was gone, everyone realized their mistake: hatred towards Margot wouldn't solve anything! Later, after feeling guilt, they took her out of the closet, finally coming back into their senses. It says, “They walked slowly down the hall in the sound of the cold rain. They turned through the doorway to the room in the sound of the storm and thunder, lightning on their faces, blue and terrible. They walked over to the closet door slowly and stood by it.” This points to the children's displeasure and how they finally realized their mistakes of torturing Margot. Returning to the emotion of the characters, when the sun bursted out with it's alluring rays of sunshine, they saw and felt what she had experienced on earth, which was a beyond memorable experience. They then realized their faults and overcame their emotions. Overall, jealousy is an evil reaction that can push an individual to carry out vicious acts in order to ruin somebody's life-in other terms, it should be completely avoided to make our Earth- or Venus a better
