    Why Wilderness

In his speech “Why Wilderness?”, Roderick Frazier Nash uses his power of persuasion, knowledge, and personal belief to convey how essential our wilderness is. He is trying to accomplish two things; persuading the reader that wilderness is important enough to put forth an effort into preserving it, and present to the (already pro-wilderness) audience how he believes they should do so. By contrasting the past and present of our wilderness and what we have and haven’t done to keep it, Nash suggests that we are not currently on the correct path. Nash does an excellent job of proving to the reader and the audience that change is in order without bombarding them with negativity.…

    WILDERNESS STATION

In "A Wilderness Station" the character of Annie Herron is presented through a series of letters and memoirs. These documents tell us some of the events surrounding the death of her husband, Simon. These letters and memoirs are written by different people in Annie's life, such as George Herron (Simon's brother), Reverend McBain, James Mullen, Christena Mullen and by Annie herself. In a memoir published in the Carstairs Argus newspaper Fiftieth Anniversary Edition, George Herron wrote his version of the circumstances of his arrival to Carstairs and he also gives his version surrounding the accidental death of his brother. Annie, on the other hand, gives conflicting stories of the day her husband died. She tells two different versions of what occurred on the day her husband died. She tells Mr. Mullen that she killed her husband when she first arrives at the Gaol and then tells her friend Sadie Johnstone in a letter that her brother-in-law killed Simon. Given these conflicting stories we are unable to determine what really happened to Simon Herron.…

In "The Place, the Regions, and the Commons," Gary Snyder discusses the importance of place when dealing with the environment and establishment of ideological hearths. The contrasting sides between the natural world and synthetic societies play a large part within the essay, for we must take a stand when determining our own personal place. Snyder cites many examples of how humanity's search for place leads to the destruction of the natural world around us, such as overgrazing in the commons. This clash between the necessity for a stable "place" and the universal needs of nature force us to find an equilibrium in which a comprehensive happiness can be reached.…

Entering the 20th century, America was evolving into a developed, industrialized nation. With this influx of industrialization, more land was being converted to be used consumptively. The American population was rising which required the conversion of lands for settlement, along with the resources to build settlements. An issue associated with an increasing population is the requirement of additional food sources. In America between 1850 and 1910, 190 million acres of forest land was converted into agriculture (MacCleery 2011). The accumulation of these expansions over time drastically reduced the amount of wilderness in the United States. Without regulations and guidelines to protect the natural resources, the American public and conservationists…
