Abstract
Aging and Disability are two concerns that we as a society should have at all times. Are these types of minorities looking at changes then they are used to? I would have to say “yes” they are looking at less job opportunities, more advanced technology that was not there at their time of growing up, to less people taking into consideration those who are disabled.
Aging and Disability
Aging is defined as the process of growing old or developing the appearance and characteristics of old age. And disability is defined as having a physical or mental condition that limits a person’s movements, senses, or activity. I feel that these two things are important parts of our generation, the way these people are treated show us what we should expect in the future. Do we want this for our future? I would have to say “NO” and in order for this not to happen to us when we hit old age or heaven forbid we become disabled in some way, we have to make changes now and the only way to do that is to better understand these two minorities. We need to be their voices and show them that we are fighting for them just as much as they are fighting for themselves.

* What is ageism? How does ageism influence the presence of diversity in society?

Ageism is defined as prejudice and discrimination against older people. Schafer writes that for the ageist, elderly persons reflect the image of disease, death, and dying as well as a reminder that we will all be old one day. (2012, pp. 395-396). Another stereotype of the elderly is that they are slow and mentally dysfunctional. All of this is further emphasized by society’s fixation with youth and anti-aging, and the viewpoint that middle-age and younger is superior to old age maintains the elderly status as a subordinate group regardless of race or sex. Macionis writes that ageism compels older people to turn to youth enhancing medications such as Botox, and Viagra as well as plastic surgery to lessen the effects of aging and consequential ageism and age-based prejudice. ((2012, p. 122). Ageism influences the presence of diversity because those who are affected by ageism within their career may lose their job due to newer, younger, cheaper people coming into the workplace to take over their current position. This may leave those who are older without proper insurance to take care of their aging bodies which could result in earlier deaths and lack of diversity in the world. And when the younger generations take over positions in the workplace that workplace will have a lack of diversity as well.

* What is the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA)? How does the ADEA address issues for the aging population?
The Age Discrimination in Employment Act was put into place in 1967 to prohibit discrimination of people over the age of 40 in the work place. The ADEA addresses issues for the aging population by making it illegal to fail or refuse to hire or to discharge any individual or otherwise discriminate against any individual with respect to his compensation, terms, conditions, or privileges of employment, because of such individual’s age. Also it makes it illegal to limit, segregate, or classify his employees in any way which would deprive or tend to deprive any individual of employment opportunities or otherwise adversely affect his status as an employee, because of such individual’s age.

Source material must be documented in the body of the paper by citing the authors and dates of the sources. The full source citation will appear in the list of references that follows the body of the paper. When the names of the authors of a source are part of the formal structure of the sentence, the year of the publication appears in parenthesis following the identification of the authors, for example, Smith (2001). When the authors of a source are not part of the formal structure of the sentence, both the authors and years of publication appear in parentheses, separated by semicolons, for example (Smith and Jones, 2001; Anderson, Charles, & Johnson, 2003). When a source that has three, four, or five authors is cited, all authors are included the first time the source is cited. When that source is cited again, the first author’s surname and “et al.” are used. See the example in the following paragraph.
Use of this standard APA style “will result in a favorable impression on your instructor” (Smith, 2001). This was affirmed again in 2003 by Professor Anderson (Anderson, Charles & Johnson, 2003).
When a source that has two authors is cited, both authors are cited every time. If there are six or more authors to be cited, use the first author’s surname and “et al.” the first and each subsequent time it is cited. When a direct quotation is used, always include the author, year, and page number as part of the citation. A quotation of fewer than 40 words should be enclosed in double quotation marks and should be incorporated into the formal structure of the sentence. A longer quote of 40 or more words should appear (without quotes) in block format with each line indented five spaces from the left margin.1

Entries are organized alphabetically by surnames of first authors and are formatted with a hanging indent. Most reference entries have three components:
Authors: Authors are listed in the same order as specified in the source, using surnames and initials. Commas separate all authors. When there are seven or more authors, list the first six and then use “et al.” for remaining authors. If no author is identified, the title of the document begins the reference.
Year of Publication: In parenthesis following authors, with a period following the closing parenthesis. If no publication date is identified, use “n.d.” in parenthesis following the authors.
Source Reference: Includes title, journal, volume, pages (for journal article) or title, city of publication, publisher (for book).
