The economic condition of persons and groups can be measured with a criterion called socioeconomic status (SES). It serves as a composite of the economic status of a family or unrelated individuals on the basis of occupation, educational attainment, and income. Many educators place their students at specific SES levels on the basis of similar observations about their families, based on the way students dress, the language they use, and their eligibility for free or reduced lunch. Many social reformers, educators, and parents view education as a powerful device for achieving social change and the reduction of poverty. The United States can be divided into classes based on income and occupation. The following classes are of the unemployed and homeless, working class, middle class, upper middle class, and upper class. Educators must consciously review their expectations for students and their behavior toward students from different levels of SES to ensure that they are not discriminating. Instructional methods and teaching strategies may vary greatly, depending on the environment in which students live. It is essential that all students be provided with a quality education.
The few U.S. students who live in high-income communities within generous states attend public schools funded at $15,000 or more per student per year, whereas other students in poor communities within stingy states are supported by $3,000 or less per year in funding for their schools (Gollnick & Chinn, 2006).     As shown in item A, some sociologists believe that the most important factors causing social class differences in education are class differences. They believe there are deep-rooted differences between the middle and the lower class. An example they give is the lower class’ need for fatalism and collectivism. Fatalism is the belief that all events are predetermined and ‘whatever happens will happen’. This can lead to them not trying as hard in education, as they have been brought up to believe their efforts wont effect the outcome. Collectivism is the idea that it is better to be part of a group then to succeed as an individual. Both these views contrast the middle class views, as the middle class try and teach their children that you should be trying to achieve all the time. Also, the middle class believe that you should be strong and individual to prepare you for later life. Sociologists such as Engelmann believe that the language the lower class families use at home directly affect the grades of their children. Engelmann’s studies the language used by low paid black Americans, and found it was a low standard. This restricted code used in the lower class households isn’t used at school as Bernstein tells us. At school and in middle class homes, they use the elaborate code. This is language that is more complex, longer sentences and is context free. This then disadvantages lower class children, resulting in them underachieving. From a young age, lower class children are disadvantaged as they are not likely to get to go to nursery. Nursery aids your learning and widens your vocabulary, meaning that middle class children will be more use to the education system and to using longer sentences, which would help in exams. Also, they are more use to the format of a school with the teacher in charge.     One of the most important social factors that impacted the scenario the most appeared to be economic status or social class. In the given scenario Tomas Juarez made the decision to work with under privileged kids from low-income families, although he started out working in a multi-diverse suburban school. The children that Juarez worked with in this were different from the children he later worked with in that these children were very active in school affairs and extracurricular activities. Not only did the children affect the situation but also the teachers. Juarez explained “It was a pleasure to work with a team who planned interesting lessons and based on a constructivist approach, engaged students in the content, and developed higher-order thinking skills.” Which will bring us to our next social factor, environment or locality. With the changing of environments he described how the smell of the halls never set well and the halls were dirty, at the beginning of the school year. His classroom did not even have enough chairs to seat all of his students. The windows were covered with cardboard-like material and some of the tiles were missing from the ceiling of his classroom, Juarez described the transition between atmospheres as he had been “spoiled” in the suburbs. The third and most interesting social factor from the scenario I found was social stratification, although Juarez started his career knowing that he wanted to work with children from families with low-incomes that would classify as stratification simply because he ranks the people and children from both experience based on income, wealth and obviously their power in society. A solution to the scenario is that Juarez could use what he has learned from both experiences and apply it to his current situation to help improve the school and lives of the children.     Spending at one school can make a huge difference on the quality of education than from another school. The school spending difference is often significant because teacher’s salaries are based on their experience and approval or college degrees they might have earned. Low poverty schools have more experienced and higher paid teachers, than a high poverty school where the teachers can be inexperienced, low salaries and a high turn over rate. Research in Baltimore found teacher’s at one school in a high poverty neighborhood were paid on average $36,600 a year, where at another school in the same district the average teacher’s salary was $57,000 a year in a low poverty neighborhood. If both schools have twenty teachers the difference in dollars available for the two schools is over $400,000 a year. Think about how much equipment, supplies, and higher quality teachers that much money can provide for a school. School funding in most states is tied to the wealth of the neighborhood. Communities and students that are at an economic disadvantage often need the most help and are unable to receive the quality of education provided by other schools.
