Introduction
The success story of Nirma starts from its beginning. In 1969, Karsanbhai Patel tries his hand at making phosphate-free detergent powder. The product was named as Nirma (after Mr. Patel’s daughter Nirupama), a brand which today commands a value of Rs.4,840 crore. The product line of Nirma holds an array of consumer products ranging from cosmetics, soaps, detergents, salt and soda ash. Along the way, the Nirma brand name has become almost synonymous with low-priced detergents and toilet soaps.
Earlier the product was packed in polythene bags and was distributed within the reach of just 15 kms. Soon the distribution area widens and reached outside the boundaries of Gujrat. The detergent was priced at Rs. 3/- kg in competition to the other MNC brands costing Rs. 13/- kg. In less than ten years, Nirma became the top selling detergent in India.
By 1999, the company had become the largest detergent manufacturer in India. It had more than 38% market share in the detergent segment.
The best case of - Give your consumer what he wants, when he wants, where he wants and at the price he wants, selling will be done quite automatically. This is the marketing 'mantra ' of Nirma.

Advertising and Promotional Strategy

Nirma 's success is synonymous with its advertising and marketing strategy. In the early years, the Nirma packet featured a lady washing a garment. Later, however, the design was changed and an image of his daughter was featured on the pack. The white dancing girl, featured in Nirma 's television advertising, is perhaps the most enduring image of Nirma.
It’s simple and catchy jingle - Dudh si safedi Nirma se aye, rangin kapda bhi khil khil jaye –is socially accepted has continued to echo in the drawing rooms of middle-class Indian homes through the decades. While the jingle

With the launch of Sure Deodorants, HUL has brought the world’s no.1 brand in deodorants to India with the hope that it garners the same level of success for HUL as achieved in Europe and America. Before the launch of rexona deodorants in 1995, the segment was a non-existent one and HUL’s insight of an existing market convinced them of taking there almost 50 year old rexona brand (rexona soaps were launched in 1947 in India) into the segment. The fact that within 2 years of its launch it held a market share of almost 40 percent with the remaining being split between smaller and lesser known competitors like Old Spice, Brut etc. is a testimony of HUL’s sound business sense. HUL’s general business trend of having multiple products in the same segment for capturing all the benefits of the multiple positioning continued here also, with its launch of Axe in 1999, its new trendier and youthful range of deodorants. Aggressive marketing and the westernized feel made Axe achieve 40 percent market share within 2 years of its launch and became the market leader, a position it holds currently too. This made rexona deodorant’s market share dip to 9 percent. The large dip in rexona’s presence forced HUL to try different ideas to combat it, starting from clubbing it with Lux to changing of the segment it operated in from deodorants to anti-per spirants. Calling rexona a failure would be undermining the market Axe has garnered today, once created by rexona. Axe has always been a dearer child to HUL, be it marketing or advertising. Per se rexona was nowhere near Axe notwithstanding the fact that Indian consumers has always associated rexona with traditional soap industry and this always prevented HUL from marketing it the way Axe was marketed. It is also a fact that consumers especially Indian avoid products that create confusion, like the one created by rexona by switching from deodorants to anti per spirants. Such kind of…

Its first introduced NIVEA Crème in 1912, and became the base of their brand and was known as the “caretaker” of skin. For most of the lifespan of NIVEA Crème it was essentially the sole competitor in the face cream market, and so the consumers were able to get to know the brand and develop a close relationship to the brand. It did not face competition until 1960 when another German company launched Crème 21. Although it was an identical product to NIVEA’s Crème, Crème 21 was backed by a large amount of advertising aimed at the mass market. It is through this competition that NIVEA was forced to evaluate their business strategy and brand image. While they were happy that their brand image was recognized and understood by the market, they were shown how their brand had an “older” image and was not viewed as young, dynamic, and modern like the new competitors were. NIVEA’s decades of branding and assimilation into the everyday lives of its consumers had built the equity for them that allowed them to maintain the market advantage for as long as they have.…

Gone are the days of advertisements with product-specific features only. The viewers are now welcoming creative television commercials sporting social messages, the company’s goodwill gestures and even depicting real life stories. And this one, very imaginatively visualises a one minute forty second true story. The latest rendition of Banglalink’s Din Badaler Cheshta, produced by Banglalink and Cogito Marketing Solutions and directed by Amitabh Reza essentially narrates the story of Abul Kalam Azad, chairman and managing director of Azad Products Pvt Ltd, who dreamt his dreams, struggled hard, and achieved them. Although, like other advertisements, it aims at cashing in on melodrama, there is no denying that owing to the nature of the story and the actual events having taken place, it carries a spirit of great achievement. The commercial summarily depicts Azad’s struggle from a poor village youth to what he is today. All the sets have been minutely constructed – the bus, brandings, newspaper, horse rides and even the beautiful belles in their 70’s fashion – bringing the feel of that time to life. At one stage, when the narrator voices – herey jabo boley toh shopno dekhini – one feels a strong hair-raising adrenalin rush. The advertisement opens with monochrome visual - Azad’s childhood endeavour of trading coconuts from one village to another. ‘It was actually a real life incident’, says Azad, sitting for an interview with New Age. ‘While transporting those fruits in a small boat, a bigger boat hit us and our boat capsized leaving all the fruits floating. And while passengers from passer-by boats actually tried to take them, I and my cousin Hassan were trying our…
