Adnan Syed Case Summary
The case against Adnan Syed that sent him to jail for the rest of his life was frail and full of holes. On January 13, 1999, Hae Min Lee was murdered at 2:36 PM. The prime witness for the case was a drug dealer, Jay. He said that Adnan was the one who murdered Hae. Adnan was just a 17-year-old kid. He was very well liked and he was not capable of murdering Hae. Adnan’s case was clearly mismanaged because if you look at all the facts, you would find inexplicable gaps in the case against him. After I listened to twelve podcasts about this case for several weeks, I was instantly suspicious of Jay. After reading Jay’s three stories, from the first interview, second interview, and second trial testimony, I found huge inconsistencies and cannot consider Jay to be even slightly credible. For example, Jay has told his three different stories and he has changed where he said he saw Hae’s body, what time different calls occurred, and where he was at different times. In Jay’s first interview, he says that Adnan called him at 3:40 PM to meet him at Edmondson Ave. At 4:00 PM Jay says Adnan showed him Hae’s body at Edmondson Ave. In the second interview with Jay, Adnan calls Jay and asks to be picked up at Best Buy at 3:35 PM. The changed time makes his story seem more realistic and the Best Buy was closer to the school. At the second trial, Jay testifies that Adnan called him at 3:50 PM asking to get him (Adnan) at Best Buy. Jay also states that Adnan showed him Hae’s body in the trunk of the car at 3:55 PM. Jay has also changed his story of where he was at different times. At trial, Jay says he and Adnan were at “Cathy’s” house (not her real name) from 6:25 PM to 6:50 PM. There was no mention of “Cathy’s” house around this time in Jay’s first interview. Jay has also changed his story about his involvement in burying Hae’s body. That isn’t something you can accidentally forget. This clearly indicates that Jay cannot be telling the truth since he changed his story to make it more believable. Some people might point out that Jay’s story was similar in the second interview and at trial, but the inconsistencies cannot be ignored for convenience. Furthermore, the story that Jay told in court was an hour off at best. The author of the podcast relating to this case tried going through Jay’s story. She tried arriving at the locations at the time Jay says he was there, but it was impossible to go from place to place in the time Jay estimated.
