Actuary Science Diversity Scholarship Essay
I am Edgar Zimmerman, Jr. and I am sending this correspondence as my personal statement and request to receive your financial support again for your Actuary Science Diversity Scholarship. I am now 18 years of age and currently a freshman at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC). My major is Mathematics for Business with a Concentration in Actuarial Science.
Every actuary professional that I have talked to about becoming an actuary has recommended that I take the actuarial exams as early as I can to gain exposure and experience. In order to prepare for actuarial exams, during my first semester at UNCC, I took the first actuarial science as a first semester freshman. Currently, the second semester of my freshman year, I am enrolled in the next level actuarial science course. Taking these sophomore/junior level courses during my first year in college has been proved to be a struggle. Adjusting to college, an environment with an increased workload and highly demanding subject matter, has been difficult for me. I am still learning and gaining more understanding, but unfortunately, I did not perform as well as I wanted during my first semester. I earned Cs in my first Actuarial Science course and in Calculus III. Although my performance has been less than desirable, I am putting fort great effort and am currently working towards achieving greater academic success.

These new friendships, along with my actuary mentor, will provide a support team to assist me with my pursuit of earning a degree in Business Mathematics with a concentration in Actuary Science. I have been encouraged by many to continue to study and not feel unsuccessful because many students do not pass the first attempt at an actuarial exam, take the exam their first year of college, or take the UNCC actuary courses during their freshmen

Each person is an individual, and by respecting this people can be valued on their contributions, and not subject to negative response due to their differences. Respecting and embracing peoples differences will allow for a better working environment, and will make everyone feel more happy. Diversity is important in the work place, as staff are employed on there previous accomplishments and job skill, their personal differences do not effect the recruitment decision. Where I work we have different staff members from all round the world, with different culture's, beliefs and gender, yet we all work together as a team, and every is treats each other with respect.…

Today, I am a graduate of CUNY Baruch College with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Operations Management. Although undeniably rewarding, the road to graduation was, to say the least, strenuous. When I began the pursuit of an undergraduate degree, I was determined on becoming an accountant. However, instead of solidifying my interest in this major, the demanding curriculum along with being employed full time took a toll on my GPA. As a result, I came to the realization that…

“What’s your ideal job?” If I were asked the question I guess my answer would be lawyer/ actuary. As we all know, actuary and lawyer are usually the cores of a giant company. Many people would assume they are unrelated. Indeed, what they are in charge of is unrelated. Lawyers usually deal with external affairs such as law cases, while actuaries deal with internal affairs like investment valuation. However, as I was pretty interested in both jobs, I looked closely at them and I found a lot of similarities between them, which are the salary, qualification, and ways of working as well as their prestige.…

Like every college in the United States Tabor College has many different programs within that students participate in. Ranging from band, all the different sports, music, fine arts, and computers. The diversity on campus is very noticeable to many people at Tabor. The reason that there is so much diversity is because of the different groups. Students tend to stay within their comfort zone so they don’t want to really socialize with other people afraid that they might not have things in common with them. This happens not only so much all over Tabor College but at every other campus across the United States. There has been many efforts into programs that try to bring the students together and try to have them interact with each other. Diversity has many faces that range from gender, culture, ethnicity, race, economic status, physical abilities, and many more, and this can be a problem that can affect many people who are employed or looking for employment in society because they are being judged or discriminated against for their differences. But if business took the time to understand the importance of differences in people so many doors could open for the employers and employees. Allowing diversity in the workplace could increase work morale, attendance, customers, and efficiency and create a less stressful environment for employees. This is possible by first increasing the diversity in the workplace and allowing for employees to learn about each other’s differences and…

After completing my first semester of college, I have found a special drive within myself to do more and more. I was fortunate enough to seek help from individuals who also see the diversity barrier as a problem and ask them to educate me on why this is a problem and how can we as individuals do our part. Being from a city like Los Angeles, where we can find an exhausting amount of different cultures, we would expect to have many different faces in multiple professions. Instead we see the minimal. I attended a conference at the UC Irvine School of Medicine that really opened my eyes to the problems of diversity in medicine. This is a conference that I will forever be grateful that I attended. Here I listened to speakers of similar background…

    1. Learning about socioeconomic status has given me a new perspective on people who are less fortunate and has taught me to become more empathetic towards others. Empathy is a very important skill to have when consulting with others. It allows you to feel what they are feeling while putting both of you on an even level. In my personal opinion I believe it is not morally right to judge or criticize a person based on their background. Rather an individual should be judged according to their actions and the type of personality they have. More specifically learning about socioeconomic status has taught me to help those who are less fortunate and help better the community by volunteering and supporting families through the upcoming holidays.…
