The Christian Ideology

In the life of the body a man is sometimes sick, and unless he takes medicine, he will die. Even so in the spiritual life a man is sick on account of sin. For that reason he needs medicine so that he may be restored to health; and this grace is bestowed in the Sacrament of Penance.
-St Thomas Aquinas

Even Paul, once a cynic and a persecutor of the church of God admits that one can receive salvation from the grace of God through faith and that is the true essence of Christianity. Paul calls on all good Christians, whom have been sinning, to turn back to God and curse those who are perverting the gospel of Christ. For everyman, faith is not sufficient enough, for him to achieve salvation for his sins, but neither is good works. For good Christians, salvation and absolution will be obtained through contrition, confession and penance. Paul though, would be critical of the path everyman travels in order to be saved. He would say the path is just too long and can be simplified. In reality, Everyman travels on a journey of disappointment. Those whom he thought he could rely on to travel the journey with him, denied him. Paul exclaims in his letter, “A man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ” (Galatians 2:14). Work under the law is not sufficient enough only faith. Even Everyman discovers that when the grim reapers comes calling, his good deeds alone cannot bring him salvation; neither can his kindred, cousin or material possessions. He pleads with his Good Deeds for help: “I pray you help me in this need.” (1834) Good Deeds replies, “I am sorry of your fall and fain would help you and I were able.” (1834) Good Deeds is not strong enough by itself to accompany Everyman. The burden of sin is so grand that sin is weakening good deeds. A good Christian then according to Paul cannot be justified by just

He states, “Men are responsible before God not only for their personal sins, but also for their national sins.” To some extent, that statement holds true in the Christian responsibility as a citizen to vote and change the political atmosphere. Still, many things that nations do are outside of the control of the everyday citizen. Looking at the first century church, Paul was a citizen of Rome, faithfully preaching the gospel, while Christians were being persecuted. Paul’s responsibility was to share the gospel, which he faithfully did, but still persecution was taking place. Later in the book he states that Christians are guilty, by “neglect of duty” to share the gospel, because people still live in sin. Again, on a personal level Christians must fulfill the personal duty of sharing the gospel. The fact that there are still people living in sin and that a nation commits sins does not mean that each believer is living in sin. Every Christian must fulfill his or her God given role in sharing the gospel and spreading the light of…

The Divine Command Theory leaves no room for reconciliation with the concepts of Christian liberty and God’s undeserving grace. There is no room for failure according to this concept because we will never be able to keep all of God’s commandments. It is difficult, dare I say impossible, to accept this theory if one is a true believer. By rejecting the concept of grace, one rejects the very compassion and reason Jesus died on the cross for us. The apostle Paul states, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God-not the result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life" (Hollinger, 2002, p.100) (Ephesians 2:8, New Living Translation). I will never be able to earn the grace of God, yet it is his “internal working of grace” that allows me to be ethical (Hollinger, 2002, p.100). "If the Son shall make you free, you shall be free for real" and free from the condemnation of the law.…

Christians should not give into the world when times get tough or reject the true God like Mr. By-Ends and his friends in Pilgrim’s Progress did. Believers that are non-devoted and fall into the worldly ways were never fully saved in the first place. If a Christian truly puts their faith in Christ, then they would want to change. When a believer gets saved God casts a more aware conviction on your conscience. Many Christians believe that if they repent once when you convert than they are good to go, sadly this theory is indeed wrong. Repentance is an ongoing task for a believer’s life, which God gifted us with through free grace. The beloved book Westminster Confession of Faith stats “The act of God’s free grace in Christ; yet it is of such necessity to all sinners, that none may except pardon without it.” (Chap. XV Sect. 3). All humans are born with this sinful nature, which we cannot escape unless we repent to God. It is very important to note that emotional breakdowns are not repentance. Repentance is motivation by conviction to turn away from sin. If you keep rejecting the motivation by conviction that God gives you, you will become hard hearted. Since the dawn of time Christians have hated the way guilt feels from God, most of the time they will quit believing the Truth because of this. In Pilgrim’s Progress Hope talks about the dangers of this type of backsliding saying “Guilt, and to meditate Terror, are grievous to them; they like not to see their misery before they come into it…” (Pg.…

Assembly Bill 109 was signed by Governor Edmund Brown Jr. and implemented on October 1, 2011 to close the revolving door of low-level inmates cycling in and out of state prison. This brings me to my final point. We are saved from our sins by faith. When we hear the gospel, we must have faith and believe that the word is true. Then must trust in the Lord our God, fully. The final act involves repentance. This does not just merely mean to feel sorry for what we have done. We have to actually have a “change of mind” and turn from our wicked…

On another note, in the Christian belief we are not guaranteed a place in heaven by the deeds we complete, good or bad, nor are we condemned to hell by the bad deeds we commit because we can be redeemed, and this is another reason why I think Augustine felt so enamored with Christ because He was merciful, and not judgmental. In Christianity there is no good or evil, just sin, and because Jesus died for our sins we have the ability to ask for forgiveness because of the self-sacrifice Jesus made for…

In Paul’s epistle to the Romans he gives us the foundation of Christian life in regards to how we should not only see the world, but also how we should act in a world that rejects the gospel of Christ. In Romans 1-8 Paul teaches us how we are not able to come to a saving grace through our works, but that it must come from Christ alone, and not only to the Jews, but to the Gentiles also. Paul tells us however, that this will not be easy, but we that we need to remember who is ultimately in control of everything around us.…

Many believe penance is a canon or law that ensures one’s salvation for conducting or carrying out acts that would be considered a sin either in the eyes of God, or in the eyes of the church as stated by Hunt…”the church still insisted that the shedding of blood was a sin requiring penance.” (Hunt, 2009. P322). Many believe pennance is one of those things where an individual is admitting to a weakness, or failure within themselves, which can make it very difficult to ask for. While some may look at it as a necessity, some may consider it not only embarrassing, but an admission that they are a bad person. Others may consider this a way that they can release themselves of any guilt from anything they may have done that wasn’t right in the eyes of God. As much as the church considered the Eucharist of major importance, so they did with penance. I believe this is why the church placed such a high importance on it, especially for the invaders who may have killed hundreds, to thousands of their enemy as it provided a way of forgiving their sins. Because God was not available to personally give them forgiveness, it was declared that priests and bishops could act on Gods behalf to provide salvation for those asking for forgiveness.…

What being a Christian means to me is first and foremost believing Jesus is the Son of God, and He died to save people from their sins. Being a Christian means a person believes Jesus is the only way one may be forgiven of their sins and receive eternal life. What makes someone a Christian is his or her faith, not deeds. If someone is a Christian, he or she will continually be conformed to the likeness of God’s one and only Son, who was perfect. This does not mean Christians will ever be perfect on earth, but we will mature as Christians more and more over time as the Holy Spirit convicts us and as we continue to live for God’s purpose. Being a Christian also means we surrender to God’s will, and we stop living for ourselves in our sinful nature and instead live to glorify God. Once a person has accepted Jesus into their heart as Lord and Savior, that person is dead to sin, and forever saved. If a person is never convicted to change their sinful behaviors and attitudes, I would question whether or not that person is a Christian. As Christians, we should most certainly obey God’s instruction to share the gospel with everyone, as Jesus instructed in the Great Commission. I do not believe doing good deeds makes one a Christian, but doing good deeds and putting others first is certainly a result of being a Christian. I also do not believe that anyone who is saved will not be convicted by the Holy Spirit to live for God. After all, we were made to glorify Him, the One who made us. The most important thing we as Christians are to show towards others is love. Love is what binds all other fruits of the Spirit together. Even if we have faith that can move mountains, if we have not love, we are nothing. How much could we really serve, obey, and do God’s will if we do not love Him, others, and ourselves? My guess is not much. The Bible continually exhorts us to love others, Christians and…

    Faith and Good Works

    • 303 Words

Faith and good works are similar because in being saved you are doing good works to make your sinful ways be gone. Faith is the trust of the Lord and allowing you to obey his laws that he has set forth to live that Christian lifestyle. A person is justified by faith that God has declared you saved and that sinners become righteous. Good works are the good deeds and person actions that create the interior qualities of grace and faith. It is not just about the thought of a good deed it is the actions you perform to show to God that you are being faithful in showing people the true love of the lord, (James 2:14-18) “What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well," but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it? So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead. Indeed someone might say, "You have faith and I have works." Demonstrate your faith to me without works, and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works”. In (James 2:20) he states, “Can’t you see that faith without good deeds is useless”, in that statement it describes that you shouldn’t just have faith in the lord and pray and be all talk you need evidence to back up what you are being faithful in. We are saved by faith, not by works. But, once saved, we do good works because we are already…

The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation (commonly called Confession, Reconciliation or Penance) is one of seven sacraments of the Catholic Church and sacred mysteries of Eastern Christianity, in which the faithful obtain divine mercy for the sins committed against God and neighbor and are reconciled with the community of the Church. By this sacrament Christians are freed from sins committed after Baptism. Since the Reformation there has been long-running disagreement between the Catholic Church and Protestantism over this sacrament, including the church's authority to absolve sins. The sacrament of penance is considered the normal way to be absolved from mortal sins which, it is believed, would otherwise condemn a person to Hell.…
