Acid Rain Lab
The purpose of this experiment was to study the effect acid rain has on seed germination and after performing this experiment is can be concluded that acid rain has a negative effect on seed germination. When seeds are soaked in an acidic solution the process of germination slows. Acidic solutions, while do slow growth of a seed, they do not kill the seed. A seed can be dormant for a majority of its lifespan, seeds watered with acid solutions stayed in a dormant condition. For example, trial three (3) part one (1) and two (2) both experienced germination. Whereas, trial one (1) part one (1) and two (2) and trial two (2) part one (1) and two (2) experienced very little to no growth; these seeds were dormant during the experiment. Twenty (20) …show more content…
The seeds that were watered with acidic solutions developed a rust colored sold along the outer edges of the paper towel. While the most successful trials, water with tap water, developed mold differently. One of the controlled trials developed very little mold, but the mold was bright colors like yellow and pink. The other controlled trial developed large amounts of different types of mold. This trial also developed a small amount of yellow and pink mold but a large amount of dark spore-like areas. These areas were a black color and were scattered about the paper towel. This test also had light brown colored mold in various areas. The seeds also molded in the trial creating a thick web a on top of the paper towel spreading between the seeds. This we like mold also had small black dots about the size of a grain of salt. The two (2) trials tested with scid liquids both had a pH value of 3 when diluted with water. This proves that not only do acidic solutions affect the growth of seeds but also the growth and variation of mold. Overall this experiment was very beneficial and can be used in further research done on the subject of seed germination. This experiment can help scientists, farmers, and students study and compare the effect that “acid rain” has on a small scale to then later apply this research in everyday

An avocado seed is used in this experiment. For this type of seed to start the process of germination, the favorable climate is typically very warm. If someone was to plant an avocado seed and see the quickest results, they should place the seed in the sun. Along with waiting a few days between watering the seed, allowing the soil to dry out. For the seed to germinate properly, the bottom half of the seed will be emerged into water. Once the top of the seed becomes dry it will crack and the exterior brown skin will come…

In this experiment our main objective was to create three gaseous oxides CO₂, SO₂ and NO₂ by using data that was collected using a pH sensor which was connected to a laptop with LoggerPro and Vernier. We created the gases by bubbling each gas into the water to create the three acidic solutions we were looking for. Once that step was completed, the pH levels of all three solutions were compared to each other to see the different strengths of each solution. As a result we found that NO₂ had the highest pH level change out of all the three gasses that we collected.…

On February 20, we filled two pots halfway with soil then added two MPK 10, 10, 10 fertilizer balls to both the pots, covering the soil with water making sure it was damp. We then filled the rest of the pot with more soil and sprinkled some water. Next we poked two holes that were spaced out evenly for the low density and ten holes for the high density. After that, we placed a thin layer of soil and water on the seeds and made sure they did not drown as described in the laboratory manual (Asbury, 2008). We placed them in an open container where the pots were no closer than six to eight cm from the…

    Seed Germination

In the environment, plants are critically affected by the composition of soil, as they acquire all nutrients from it. A nutrient must be soluble and must remain soluble long enough in order to travel into the roots of the plant (Kissel and Miller, 2008). Soil PH directly affects the life and growth of a plant, since it affects the availability of the nutrients needed for plant life. Most nutrients are in their most available state within a PH of 6.0 – 6.5 (Kissel and Miller, 2008). To germinate, seeds need favourable external conditions as well. In this lab the effect of acidic conditions on seed germination using lettuce seeds as the model has been observed. These properties were investigated using acidic solutions with various PH values. However, Lettuce seeds germinate best in soil with a PH of around 6.0 (Derek J. Bewley and David W. Fountain). Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate seed germination for lettuce seeds under acidic conditions ranging from PH 4 to PH7 with a focus on acidity below PH6. The rate of germination was expected to decrease as the PH drops.…

This investigation provides an insight into the use of fertilisers and shows which fertiliser germinates the seeds fastest. Fertilisers are classified into two categories; organic and inorganic. Organic fertiliser is fundamentally the remaining’s of animal and/or vegetable matter whereas inorganic fertiliser is primarily derived from chemical compounds. (6) This experiment will study the effects of different types of fertilisers on mustard seeds. The expectation is that mustard seeds germinated in liquefied fertilisers such as Seaweed and Miracle Growth (a solution…

IntroductionAcidity is the quality or state of being acid; pH below 7. Exploring the different levels of acidity affect plant growth and development, the process of germination must occur to see the affects upon the growth of the beans. Germination is the process whereby seeds or spores sprout and begin to grow. With the acidity expressed with pH levels is the measure of acidity or alkalinity of a solution, in depth the measure of the activity of dissolved hydrogen ions (H+). Following these concepts is the process of "normal" plant growth. Plants require nutrients for growth. Their process depends on the essential nutrients of abundant sunlight, water, fertile soil, and minerals6. To investigate how the plants respond to changes in the acidity of their environments, photosynthesis is another significant concept involved. Photosynthesis is the a process by which energy from the sun is trapped by chlorophyll and is later converted to chemical energy with the key reactants of water, carbon dioxide and light6. Osmosis is the diffusion of water in which the plants obtain their water and nutrients from3. Replacing water with acids of different pH levels (1…

The pomelo seedlings were observed to survive during the experimentation period. However, the growth varied from one medium to another. To compare the growth rate of pomelo seedlings in agricultural wastes and soil, the t-test was used. It is determined by the mean sample of growth of pomelo plant in the growing to media as labeled T1 to T3 as compared to a standard mean sample, that of the soil, T4.…

Acid rain has been shown to have adverse impacts on forests, freshwaters and soils, killing insect and aquatic life-forms as well as causing damage to buildings and having impacts on human health. Both the lower pH and higher aluminum concentrations in surface water that occur as a result of acid rain can cause damage to fish and other aquatic animals. Soil biology and chemistry can be seriously damaged by acid rain. Adverse effects may be indirectly related to acid rain, like the acid's effects on soil (see above) or high concentration of gaseous precursors to acid rain. High altitude forests are especially vulnerable as they are often surrounded by clouds and fog which are more acidic than rain. Other plants can also be damaged by acid rain but the effect on food crops is minimized by the application of lime and fertilizers…
