Assimilation
Individuals who utilize this strategy reject their own cultural values and indentity, and accept the host cultural values.
Those who value intergroup relations but are relatively unconcerned with cultural maintenance.
The individual devalues maintenance of his or her own cultural values and instead seeks almost exclusive interaction with members of the host society.
Individuals do not wish to maintain their cultural identity and seek daily interaction with other cultures.
Takes place when individual are absorbed into their new culture and withdraw from their old culture.
Integration
Individuals accept their own cultural values and the host cultural values.
Individuals who value both cultural maintenance and intergroup relations.
The individual entrails a positive attitude toward the maintenance of one’s cultural heritage as well toward interaction with members of the host society.
Individuals have an interest in maintaining one’s original culture, while in daily interactions with other groups.
Individuals become an integral part of the new culture while maintaining their cultural integrity.
Separation
Occurs when individuals accept their own cultural values and identify, and reject the host cultural values.
Those who cherish cultural maintenance but do not value intergroup relations.
The individual places a higher value on maintenance of his or her original culture and minimal interaction with members of the host society.
Individuals place a value on holding on to their original culture, and at the same time wish to avoid interactions with other.
Individuals keep their culture and stay independent of the new culture.
Marginalization or Deculturation
Refers to the rejection of both cultures’ values and identities.
Those individuals who value neither cultural maintenance nor intergroup relations
The individual devaluates or rejects one’s own cultural heritage as well as avoidances of interaction with members of the larger host society.
There is a little possibility or interest in cultural maintenance, and little interest in having relations with other (exclusion or discrimination)
Individuals lose their original culture and do not accept the new culture, leading to confusion and anxiety

    One nation being universalistic, the other particularistic. Lipset’s facts regarding total melting pot versus mosaic has gotten very mixed in todays’ societies. The concept of the American Dream is one that many, including non-Americans are familiar with, as it is seen in movies, magazines and other media outlets. The idea that success and prosperity will be achieved through hard work within a functioning society with few barriers is one that immigrants quickly and willingly have adapted to.
