Accounting Internship
Accounting Internship

“What do you want to do for the rest of your life?” was a question I was asked countless times during high school. Every time I hesitantly answered with “I want to be an Accountant”. It wasn't until the last trimester of my Senior year that I realized I truly and undoubtedly wanted to be an Accountant. Senior year of high school I took an Entrepreneurship hub through North Iowa Area Community College. One of the requirements for the hub was to complete a 48 hour internship. I decided that since I was so hesitant on if I wanted to be an Accountant then my best learning experience would be at a local Accounting Firm. I could have chosen to intern at a larger scale Accounting Firm like H&R Block, but instead I chose Tweeten & Young CPAs because it's locally owned and it's a smaller scale. Since it was a smaller, Carol Tweeten and Marlene Young had more time to sit down with me one on one and teach me everything I needed to know. My very first day of the internship was terrifying and I went in completely unprepared. I had no idea what I was in store for. As I walked into Tweeten & Young my heart stated racing, palms started to sweat, and I though I was going to throw up. I had never been so nervous in my life. The first thing I saw when I entered the building was the friendly smile of the receptionist. Slowly my nervous went away, but they came back and hit me like a brick wall when I met Carol Tweeten. Something about Carol made me ten times nervous than I was before. When I walked into her office I thought she was mad because she had a scowl look on her face. She looked like she wasn't happy to be there and hated her job. This made me terrified that I would one day end up like her. I didn't want to go to a job that I hated everyday for the rest of my life. After a couple weeks went by I found myself dreading going to my internship. Some days I even called in “sick” because I disliked it so much. I wasn't learning the things I

You just obtained an internship position in the Marion Tax accounting firm in the small town of Cedarville. This particular company only hires two to three interns during their busy season, which is during tax season and also in the fall as well. The majority of this company’s clients are local businesses and personal tax returns. During your interview you are informed of the job duties, responsibilities, procedures, policies, and the approximate number of hours you will be working each week. These items seem very similar to other small accounting firms, and the people whom you spoke with you seemed to easily connect with. You felt as if this was your match in terms of job preference and where you would like to work full time. As you begin your new job, you are “assigned” to a…

Everyone is asked one question, at a very young age. That question is: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” There isn’t a time I can remember when an adult didn’t ask me this question. When I was six, I would respond with the usual movie star, fashion designer, or veterinarian. My answer would be said confidently, as at this age I walked through life as if it were no big deal. My answer occasionally changed to fit with my many childhood phases, but my view on the question stayed the same. When I was a child, I replied to this inquiry the same way everyone else did; I answered with an occupation. It took me years to discover my new approach to this question. My new response did not include my dream job, but how I saw myself in the future.…

Internships are an important part of the growing experience for an individual; they can help determine what one would like to pursue for a future career, and what one would not like to do. My time interning with the National Museum of Civil War Medicine was overall an amazing experience. I now possess an overall understanding of the tasks of a collection manager must deal with on a day-to-day basis. I tackled a multitude of projects while working with Kate McDaniel, the projects consisted of dealing with loan documents, photographing artifacts, designing and creating two display cases, and researching non-accessioned objects. Through this variety of tasks, I have enjoyed some more than others and know how small non-profit museum differ from the larger ones. I loved interning at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, I met amazing individual and learned an immense amount about the field of curation, which I original knew very little about.…

I loved music, math, design, helping others, working with kids, analyzing situations and solving problems. There were to many career paths that I liked, but it always seemed to me that in order to follow one I would have to give up the rest.…

I walked into the internship and across the room, I noticed a new therapist working with patients. I assumed she was a physical therapist because she interacted with patients well and was knowledgeable on the instructions she gave the patients. She introduced herself to me as a student completing her clinical education. She impressed me with her attitude and how she conducted herself; to me, she represented a professional student. Because she shared qualities I had and she was a successful student, I knew if I implemented her qualities in physical therapy school I too could be a professional. She pushed through challenges to achieve her goals, was excited to learn new information, and enjoyed helping patients through the rehabilitation process…

Also by that point in my internship I realized I did not want to work there. I felt they were treating us like cheap labor and was turned off by the company. The frustration of the entire summer just mounted and I really didn’t care what the consequences were. Given all this it was a pretty easy decision for me to speak up. There is nothing that really could have made the decision easier as it was very simple. I couldn’t control the treatment but once I realized I wanted out I could control how I reacted to it. I will say though, had I not been fed up with the company it would have been tuff to say something, especially if I had wanted a full time job at the conclusion of the internship. I will say though, in my career I do find it easy to speak up in any situation if you have 100% support from your direct boss. If you do he will support you to speak up to others, and will respect when you speak up to him. It is important to build that trust early so you always have…

After graduating in December, I had a Bachelors of Science degree in Agriculture Leadership and Development with an emphasis in Animal Science. But I couldn’t just up and leave quite yet. I still had five months left at my internship. The Marketing and Sales Internship equipped me with so much more than I could have asked for. I built upon my relationship building strengths, and created a substantial network of peers, professors, and mentors. I was able to hone my communication skills, and how I interact with the public and potential customers. And finally, I was able to see interdepartmental communication and operations, also the interaction of one outside agency with another outside agency. This allowed me to see what worked and didn’t work in order to create ideas and plans for any future jobs I would have.…
