Academic Writing Self-Assessment
My current reading and writing skills are in my opinion on par for my level of expertise. I have a fairly in depth knowledge of how to talk to someone using correct words and sentences. I completed an associate’s degree from another college and that have helped to expand my horizons in this field. My reading skills are on par as well, I like to read books ranging from school curriculum to murder mystery novels by James Patterson. I grew up with just my mother playing both parent roles in my home and because of that I believe that she has always pushed me to strive to learn more and do better with my education, thus constantly making me read when I was younger. I don’t think that I realized the ramifications of those actions because I remember vividly that I disliked reading in my younger years.

Using the university library I believe will greatly help with my verbal communication skills. Such tools as the writing help function of the library. Using this tool it seems that I can expand my vocabulary as well as become engaged in conversation with others in discussion. In addition to that, I have multiple resource tools that will guide me in such things as APA formatting, business writing, grammar among a few of the options within the writing help resource.
Another useful tool would have to be the Write Point resource tool available to the students. I have used it already for some of my paper submissions, and is very useful in helping with all things related to writing: Grammar, punctuation, syntax, etc…
Reading I believe can be enhanced by doing just that, reading! I have expanded my vocabulary so much by reading as much as I have from the books referenced above.

I am not a professional reader, nor am I a professional writer. As a matter of fact, I don’t like writing at all, but then writing is a part of life. I was only 6 years old when I started to take an interest in reading and also started to learn how to read. My grandmother was a greater reader. She would read to me all the time and encourage me to read anything I could get my hands on. I would always see her with a book during her spare time.…

Communication skills are very important to personal or professional life. Manuscriptedit (Dec.2011) says, “Communicating the intended message clearly and effectively is an important skill, which is often a key factor in deciding the chances of success.” I feel I need to improve that skill, maybe because I’m a leaner of the English language - which isn’t my mother one - and I feel like my vocabulary needs to be improved. College is being a great help though but even before I was organising my time and taking a few hours during the week to read a book, newspapers or magazine.…

The English 3003 class has helped me in various ways in improving and shaping my writing skills. Although some of the work were tedious and sometimes frustration at times, but overall it was a fun class to be in and was a great learning experience as well. I had to take this class not because I failed to secure an 8 in the WST test but because I had problems mainly due to my poor writing. Throughout the class this quarter I experienced many methods and different types of writings and essays. The writing homework took time, and several ideas and sometimes google searches to make it a good essay I can score marks on, but in return, I learned skills and techniques…

Reading is so important because it can expand your vocabulary. A study released earlier this month suggests that enjoying literature might help strengthen your “mind-reading” abilities. Another piece of evidence is, Even if it’s been decades since you had to worry about the SATs, you can still use books to expand your mental dictionary. In fact, researchers estimate that we learn five to 15 percent of all the words we know through reading. These examples show how reading every day can really help you to grow your vocabulary. In all, reading everyday can really help you expand your vocabulary.…

What I noticed from middle school to high school in regards to my reading skills is it dramatically increased. I’ve noticed that I occasionally have intelligent conversations with my peers or even adults. In middle school, I would usually stutter or say “um” or “ah,” but as I read more, I tend to deviate away from the verbal pauses. My vocabulary had skyrocketed compared to middle school because some of the words I’ve learned in high school, I would have never known in middle school. Due to reading, it helped me to spell words correctly and gain an understanding of what the words mean. I have changed the negative thoughts I had in middle school because of high school. In middle school, I don’t imagine myself being a reader, but I’ve made positive…

Ever since I studied abroad in the U.S., improvement in argumentative writing was the most difficult part as an international student. While I naturally acquired listening and speaking skills as time passed, writing required me to practice it for betterment. In high school, I had trouble in English literature class because it was difficult to fully express my thoughts through in writing in English. Calculus was a clear cut for me with concrete answer while author’s theme in novel was ambiguous to define. After 10 weeks of Eng111 class with you, my ability to analyze complex text has been improved, and I write papers that have clearer claims with supportive stakes. All my papers deal with genre/audience awareness and creating strong arguments to get my point across. Through writing essays on developing complex claims that matter, being able to argue them, and revise them so that they are…

I am a senior in high school and am taking a year abroad next year. My parents would only agree to a year abroad if I took online college courses to make up for starting a year later. WRTG101 is the first online course I have ever taken. I chose to take a writing course because I realized that learning the fundamentals of writing is a critical component to my well rounded education. Having good writing skills will no doubt open many doors in my professional life as well. I don’t exactly know what I want to be when I grow up, but I know that I want to be able to write properly and grammatically correct. In high school, I have written many essays on novels, but nothing more elaborate than that. I wanted to be exposed to different formats of writing and different topics to express myself, and that is exactly what WRTG101 offered me. I was a little intimidated by the course because I have never used an online database to research information, never…
