Abortion
Abortion: Are you a murderer? Since the legalization of abortion in 1973, over 54 million unborn children have been killed. That's 1 baby every 20 seconds. Even if scientists could determine when consciousness begins, wouldn’t it still be wrong to distinguish a life? Some people believe that terminating a child's life before birth is alright because the child has not reached consciousness; that consciousness is a state that occurs after birth. However a child begins to dream within the womb after the brain is fully developed at forty weeks (Nilsson). Abortion should be illegal because scientific studies show how early a baby becomes conscious in the womb, it causes many problems for the mothers, and it is very dangerous. For those pro abortionists who do not believe that a child is a person until he or she is several months old, what about the premature babies? Anyone who has held a little baby that weighs less than 2 pounds knows that the child is indeed a little person: one who is struggling to live. The heartbeat of the unborn child begins 21 days after conception and a child born as early as 20 weeks after conception has a good chance of survival (Nilsson). My sister is a mother of two children, and as I attended every doctor’s appointment with her, I experienced the stages of growth in the womb. At five weeks, we could see and hear the baby’s heartbeat on the ultrasound. At only eight weeks, the baby may only be the size of a bean, but it is constantly moving, and its fingers are beginning to form and it can properly move all of the joints in the arms and legs. The unborn baby's heart starts beating at 20 days and the brain gives off brainwaves at 40 days. If these factors are used by the law to determine death, why can't they be used to determine life?
There are physical and psychological problems that can afflict women who have had abortions. Some of the more important physical problems associated with the procedure are bleeding, infections, constant

At Procon.org, it has been stated that, “Upon fertilization, a human individual is created with a unique genetic identity that remains unchanged throughout his or her life. This individual has a fundamental right to life, which must be protected.” This statement has also been proven correct by many other doctors and organizations. For example, at tfp student action.org, they tell us that, “The unborn baby's heart starts beating at 20 days and the brain gives off brainwaves at 40 days. If these factors are used by the law to determine death, why can't they be used to determine life?” If you think about it, a woman doesn’t have two brains, two heartbeats, two different DNA’s, four legs, twenty fingerprints, and so on. So this definitely means that the baby is a human being at conception. So therefore, wouldn't this baby also have its own human rights and thus abortion should not be legal? Does not the baby's life matter as much as the mother’s life matters? Dr. Joseph DeCook, executive director of the American Association of Pro-life Obstetricians and Gynecologists, says, “But we’re not talking about pregnancy, the question you have to focus on, is when does meaningful, valuable human life begin? That’s with the union of the two sets of chromosome. You have a complete human being that begins developing.” And since there is another human life at stake besides the woman, then shouldn't the woman suffer the nine months of pregnancy to save that life rather than having an abortion? And if the woman was to go through with the abortion, there is a higher risk of psychological damage to woman than their is to women who don’t have an abortion. If the woman didn’t want the child, then the child should be taken in by the many who want to adopt a child whom haven’t been able to because of the millions of aborted…

Secondly, another ethical argument in favour of abortion is consciousness. Many people would agree that abortion is completely acceptable under most circumstances as long as the human has no signs of consciousness or presence of rationality. Examples of this are the ability to develop complex language and make tools. Similarly to viability, this point of consciousness is later on in the foetus’ development and growth, as even though all the DNA is there, the fact that there's no higher brain activity strongly suggests that there's no consciousness. Even the later presence of a heartbeat and of primitive streak do not imply consciousness or preciousness, as there is no higher brain activity or self-awareness. Therefore, this argument supports…

The debate over whether abortion should be legal and to what point in the pregnancy it should be allowed has polarized many societies. Many religious preach that at the moment of conception, the new life is human and possesses a soul. Therefore, abortion is murder. Other, less extreme views, suggest the life is not human until there is a recognizable "completion of form." A third view proposes we have an obligation to create a good life for all children already born before we bring more unwanted children into the world.…

Canada has a history with the controversial issue of abortion. The two sides to this topic have strong opinions about the right and wrong decisions when it comes to abortion. One might believe that abortion should not exist in Canadian society. These people are most likely known as pro-life; who believe abortion is equal to murder. Others believe that abortion is a good thing, and has had a strong impact on Canadian society. These people are pro-choice, they believe abortion is a way to help an individual's life for the better. The R.v. Morgentaler case was about two men, including Morgentaler who were licensed physicians, they set up a private clinic providing abortion services to women who did not have the necessary approval and they were criminally charged. The R.v. Morgentaler case made a significant impact on Canadian society; more broadly this case impacted the women of Canada by granting women greater equality rights, giving them a healthier along with a safe lifestyle, and it got rid of illegal acts made by doctors.…

Life begins at the moment of conception and is sacred. It must be treated with respect and dignity. An estimated forty million to fifty million fetuses are aborted every year. That’s about 125,000 fetuses per day! If you can’t support the baby, then give it up for adoption. It doesn’t give you an excuse to have an abortion. Having an abortion is immoral and a mortal sin because everyone is a child of God. If it’s wrong to kill a child or adult, why is it legal to kill a fetus?…

Abortion is murder no matter when a person believes life becomes official. The fact that a potential life has ended before given a chance to live is enough for most people to understand why a person should never have a choice of whether a baby lives or dies. There are many reasons as to why abortion should be illegal including the descriptive and disturbing stories about how aborted babies sometime scream as they come out and the looks of pain on their faces. These…

From there we as a society have to define the standards of when having an abortion is considered murder. I believe having a baby is completely up to the mother, but the mother is not the only creator of the baby. So what if the father, who really craves a baby, never knows about the baby and she has the abortion. Also we can see how far along the babies are when they are taken out of the womb. By week 8, not even done with the first trimester, the babies eyes have formed and he or she is definitely looking like a human. Abortion should not be legal if you classify the life as human by any means. But if the baby doesn’t have a brain, then is it alive and feeling? But then why do parents mourn losses of miscarriags just weeks after conception? He or she is a human in our eyes that’s why and why would you ever end anyones life and call that humane? Even it does result in a more efficient life for the parents and the lack of one potentilly troubled life in the future. In essence I can see where it is considered inhumane to end pregnancies. I get that to some it is killing babies.. I personally do not beliee i could eer end my baby’s life but i do believe it is a woman’s…

A baby heart forms and starts beating in the fifth week of pregnancy; therefore, that would make abortion murder. The baby that is growing inside of the woman is depending on her, so when she makes the choice to end that baby's life, they are making the choice to murder another person. The federal Unborn Victims of Violence Act, which was enacted "to protect unborn children from assault and murder," states that under federal law, anybody intentionally killing or attempting to kill an unborn child should "be punished for purposely killing or making an effort to kill a human being.” Abortion is immoral because it is the intentional killing of a human being. It is a well-known fact that life begins at the moment of conception. When we perform an abortion, we take the life of an innocent child. We deny the unborn child it’s right to live and experience the world. No one has the right to take the life of another person, even an unborn child. Abortion is murder because life begins at conception. All things that grow are living. Just because the living, growing fetus is not visible, does not mean that it is not a…

Life starts when two reproductive cells unite. It is false to say that life begins when a baby is born. If they aren’t alive, then why do women kill them? Babies start as a tiny embryo, and they grow and grow. They are born, then they keep growing into an infant, and then a child, and then eventually an adult. The only difference between the embryo in the womb, and the adult lots and lots of nutrition and say 20 years time. “Abortion (is) murder (because) the being inside the mother is living. The definition of something living includes the ability to grow, which is exactly what is going on inside a woman who is pregnant. An abortion ceases the growing process, therefore ending the future life of a human being. This little being may not start off with a heartbeat or brain activity, but cells are still dividing and allowing it to grow.” (Ross,…

If a fetus is a person, then terminating its life is wrong, but if one does not consider it a person, then it is only fair to say terminating its life is not wrong and therefore morally permissible. This is why, even if abortion is immoral, it should be legal. The fundamental argument of abortion, personhood, has come to be a matter of belief. Because not everyone agrees that the biological joining of a sperm and egg equal a life, the start of personhood/life becomes a belief instead of a fact. In the United States, if what President Jefferson said “We mandate no belief, nor will we ever” then abortion should be legal, because it relies on a personal choice constructed by a set of…

The difficult question of when life actually begins has often led to several complicated and controversial decisions worldwide. Does life commence at twenty four weeks’ gestation, when a foetus can continue to exist outside the womb or twenty two weeks, because of recent advances in bio-medical healthcare? Can this timeline be brought down to eight weeks, when an embryo is deemed a foetus or should life simply begin from conception, as Muslims, Christians, and Buddhists believe? Abortion and foeticide (any act that causes the death of the foetus, including foetal homicide) are the two most commonly debated aspects of foetal law and ethics (Chervenak & McCullough, 2009).…

There are many questions surrounding abortion, but the most prevalent question focuses on when the fetus is considered a person, and when does it acquire the rights that us grown human beings hold? In The Metaphysics of a Person: Why I Am Pro-Choice By Lode Cossaer, he asserts his opinion on this subject. Cossaer argues that a fetus cannot be considered a human being with the same rights we posses until the fetus can either: feel and sense pain, or can live outside of the mothers womb. Cossaer believes that something with the characteristics of a week old fetus, something with only the potential to become a person, should not be considered a human being with rights. “Just because I destroy something that has the possibility of becoming X, is not the same as destroying X. To infer from the possibility of becoming X, that one already is X, is a fallacy” (1) ( Lode Cossaer, The Metaphysics of a Person: Why I Am Pro-Choice) This excerpt from Cossaer’s Pro-Choice article defends his opinion on a fetus only merely holding the status of a potential person, and not a full fledged human being. Cossaers argument can be summarized as follows:…

It has been widely debated over when life truly begins whether it starts at conception or when a baby first sees the light of day as it comes into this world. In worldnetdaily.com staff writer Jon E. Dougherty’s article, Life begins at Conception, he states “Life begins at conception, not birth. Birth is simply one stage of ongoing human development…Life is as real and as tangible as death; consequently, we humans are "viable" the moment we are created in the womb. Barring death by natural causes, everyone has the potential to eventually become a senior citizen someday — as long as they aren't butchered before birth. In fact, some have said we begin to die the moment we are conceived because our lives always reach that inevitable conclusion. The "not viable life" excuse doesn't hold up because, if all life is not "viable" life, then what is the purpose of having an abortion? If these human beings weren't viable and would not — if left unmolested — mature into "born" children and adults, then the abortion would be unnecessary to begin with. Also — and this is key — we humans are never "fully-developed." We're not born "complete"; we grow, change, mature and age constantly, which means we're always "developing," and we develop though the first nine months of our lives…
