Nonprofit Pitch: The ASPCA
I. Introduction
A. Attention Getter: Quote
I believe that animals are very similar to we humans, they feel and have emotions, thus they shouldn’t be mistreated or abused, rather be treated with love and respect. It was on this belief that the ASPCA was founded in 1866. The first anti-cruelty law was passed after their founding. “…..I have developed a deep respect for animals. I consider them fellow living creatures with certain rights that should not be violated any more than those of humans.” (Stewart)

In the next few minutes, I would give you an insight to enable you understand the mission behind the ASPCA, set goals and how they’ve managed to achieve them. These goals include: fighting animal cruelty, providing them with health services and shelter.

II. Body
A. The mission of the ASPCA, stated by Henry Bergh (its founder) in 1866, is “to provide effective means for prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States.” They have been able to accomplish this by creating an Anti-Cruelty group. This group runs and manages a number of programs that combat animal cruelty, one of which is the Cruelty Intervention Advocacy Program (CIA) that works in three main areas:
1. Animal Hoarding: The ASPCA describes animal hoarding as a complex public health and community issue. The CIA has responded to several hoarding cases, cared for and rehomed these animals.
2. Emergency Veterinary Care: a pet emergency can strike at any time and that’s why the ASPCA has ensured that medical care is always at reach especially for low income …show more content…
The organization also provides various animal health services to pet parents and rescued animals, a few of the services provided include:
1. ASPCA Animal Hospital: a fully equipped hospital with vets and specialists that provide high quality general care to pets
2. Animal Control Centre: The Poison emergency center is open 24hours a day, 365 days a year. The center also provides pet parents with poison safety tips.
C. Large numbers of animals are rescued every day, and to ensure they are safely rehomed, the organization put together a shelter research and development team that develops programs to help save life and improve welfare of at risk animals. A few of these programs include:
1. Adoption Ambassadors: a foster care that draws help from the community to help dogs find new homes.
2. New Research on Pets as Gifts: policies state that pets shouldn’t be adopted as gifts, based on the belief that animals who weren’t chosen by their new owners may be considered less valuable. (aspcapro.org) however, a survey conducted by the ASPCA in 2013, counters this belief and shows no correlation.
