AS Biology Metabolism
AS Biology - Unit 1
-------------------------------------------------
Metabolism
Metabolism is a term to describe all reaction which is taking place within a cell and is separated into two types which are * anabolic = compounds being built up * catabolic = compounds being broken down

-------------------------------------------------
Water
The water molecule is a molecule which is made up from 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom. It is bounded by 2 covalent bonds and has is polar.
The reason why water molecules are important for living organisms are because: 1. They are important solvents since they are polar 2. Important coolants for excessive metabolic reactions 3. Important for insulation since they have high specific heat capacities

It is a very good mechanism for transport since they are highly cohesive 5. Important reagents for chemical reactions ( such as hydrolysis and photosynthesis )

-------------------------------------------------
Carbohydrates
Separated into 3 types which are monosaccharides, disaccharides and polysaccharides
Monosaccharides
* they are three main types of monosaccharides which you have to know in this level which are
Pentoses - Such as ribose (with formula C5H10O5) and fructose
Hexose - Such as alpha and beta glucoses * All members of monosaccharides are reducing since they have the aldehyde groups, therefore they will cause a brick red precipitate to form when tested with Benedict’s solution.

Disaccharides * You would need to know 3 types of disaccharides in this level which

Energy metabolism is generally defined as “The entirety of an organism 's chemical processes. These chemical processes typically take the form of complex metabolic pathways within the cell, generally categorized as being either catabolic or anabolic. In humans, the study of how energy flows and is processed in the body is termed bioenergetics, and is principally concerned with how macromolecules such as fats, proteins, and carbohydrates break down to provide usable energy for growth, repair, and physical activity.” (Gore, 2014)…

Water, as its formula H2O suggests, consists of one oxygen bonded singularly to two hydrogen molecules (see fig 1.) Common sense would dictate that each hydrogen will be located at opposite ends of the oxygen making a linear shape, however this is not the case. H2O is tetrahedral due to the oxygens two lone pairs. In a tetrahedral molecule every bond is 109˚ from each other. However due to the repulsion from the oxygens two lone pairs, the angle H-O-H is approximately 104.5˚. This feature gives H2O its dipole property. The pole where the two lone pairs are located are more electronegative than the opposite pole, of which hydrogens are located. In addition, the electrons that compose the single (sigma) bonds are pulled closer to the oxygen than the hydrogen, which adds to the difference in electronegativty at each pole of the molecule.…
