What would you do if you got attacked by a rip current? Would you panic or would you stay calm and swim? Rip currents are strong waves that take the water from the coast and take it back to the ocean. Over 100 people drown each year because of rip currents. Over 80% of the rescues on beaches are because of rip currents. In all three sources: “Life Saver” by John DiConsiglio, “Rip Current Safety” by National Weather Service, and “How to Survive Beach Rip Currents” by UNSWTV, it shows that lifeguards need to be best prepared for dire situations, such as rip currents.…

Many parents, when faced with the teenage years and teenage musical tastes, buy their child a headset and hope that their child’s hearing will survive the next ten years. (The generation gap can often be measured in decibels!) And yet, while schools provide the counterbalance to popular reading matter with good literature and a talkshow view of contemporary society with courses on history and current events, it is left to parents to provide the counterbalance to popular culture. The trick is how to protect your child from being the class “dork” at the age of fifteen and at the same time make certain that he/she is not ridiculed as the class dunce the first week at college…

A Review and Commentary On:A Time to Kill By John GrishamA Time to Kill written by John Grisham is a book that presents the high racial tensions in Canton Mississippi in the early 1990 's. The book opens with two young men, James Lewis Willard and Billy Ray Cobb, joy riding in their brand new yellow pick up truck decked out with Confederate flags. They speed though black neighborhoods throwing full beer bottles at people and houses, until they come across ten-year-old Tonya Hailey walking home from the grocery store. The men pull over, trap her, rape her repeatedly, beat her, hang her, throw her off a bridge and leave her for dead. Her siblings find Tonya later that day, barely alive, her father, Carl Lee Hailey., and the black community are outraged. Tonya 's missing shoe is found in the back of the yellow pick up truck and both men are arrested for rape and attempted murder. Carl Lee confronts his lawyer, Jake Brigance , about similar cases where the white criminals were let off or given light sentences for similar charges, which enrages Carl Lee further. Carl Lee asks if Jake will stand by him in a jam, Jake promises he will. The next morning Carl Lee shoots the two men on the way to their arraignment, both men die and a cop is shot and loses his leg. Carl Lee is immediately arrested for the murder of the two men, as promised Jake stands by his side. Carl Lee confesses to the murders and admits he never had anything against the two men until they messed with his baby, he feels sorry for the men 's families, but not for what he has done. Jake and Carl Lee begin to discuss every aspect of the case immediately, they decide that Carl Lee with plea not guilty by reason of insanity. The District Attorney, Rufus Buckley, begins to discuss the importance of keeping the case in this county in order to have a better chance of an all white jury, Jake files a change of venue for the opposite reason. The play, 12 Angry Men, and the film, A Time to Kill, have a similar theme. In 12 Angry Men, a Latino is accused of stabbing his father to death, where a guilty verdict would mean a death sentence. In A Time to Kill, a black man took the law into his own hands, killing two alleged rapists and the sentence for this man, if found guilty meant death in a gas chamber. The play and film both involve prejudice against two commonly accused minorities in America. All jurors were white and with the combination of racism it made it seem like injustice was certain. For example, Jake Brigance, the lawyer for Carl Lee filed for a change of venue. The reason for this was that he knew the jury would be comprised of white jurors, where his client was of African American decent. He knew that a white jury would be racially prejudicial towards an African American defendant. At this time in America, such an assertion would not have been unfounded.…

My big pet peeve is when the website says to the effect, please follow these directions to re-enable cookies in your browser and then gives instructions to globally allow both first and third party cookies. Seriously, why don't they get that people who have disabled cookies globally probably don't want to enable them? Not that all third-party cookies are evil, of course, but the idea of anyone knowing what websites I've visited is more than a little creepy to me. Probably the worst of them; like the current locations on every part of phones even giving exact address of were a photo was taken. So, in order to preserve my privacy with minimal fuss along with keeping my computer from becoming slower than a slug, I have discovered three ways of browsing without doing this. Number one Figure out which domains I have to allow. It's usually fairly easy, though occasionally it's not. Whether or not, it's one of those things that seem…

Bugging out has to be planned for, gear and materials purchased and practice runs made. Leaving during a crisis brings another set of problems, which have to be dealt with. This brings us to the bug-out-bag. Do you need one?…

A Time to Kill showed the true feelings of the Old South. Two drunken men raped a young black girl, and the girl’s father kills them. Charged with two counts of murder, Carl Lee goes to court. His lawyer, a young white man by the name of Jake Brigance, defends him in court. Jake is then hated by the rest of the community. The Ku Klux Klan is called on one of the rapists’ brother, Freddy. The KKK then attempt to plant a bomb under Jake’s porch, which forces him to send his wife and daughter away until trial is over. On the day of trails, the KKK and black people start fighting outside the courthouse. Grand Dragon, Stump Sisson, is killed apparently by some black people. After Stump’s death, Freddy is outraged and increases efforts in getting revenge/killing Jake. Because of the occurrences on trial day, the National Guard is called on to keep peace for the remainder of Carl Lee’s trial. Despite having the National Guard in Clanton, Freddy and the KKK continue their efforts in killing Jake. While being escorted into the courthouse one morning, Jake is shot at by the KKK, but they miss and seriously hurt a guardsman. After their failed attempt at shooting him, they decide to burn down his house. Jake is not stopped from defending Carl Lee, however.
