Each of the seven habits listed have been able to make me be the most suitable leader I can be. The first three habits can be described as “make and keep commitments” (Covey, 1989, p.43). This expression means that in order to be an effective and trusted leader you must make promises that are followed through by keeping them. By continually making promises that are not being fulfilled you will lose …show more content…

My father and uncles’ instilled a statement in my head from a young age that I will never forget. This statement is closely related to the Law of Legacy and very relevant to being a leader in the modern business world. The statement only consists of a few words, but these words are very powerful and if this statement is followed, your reputation as a leader will be respected and hopefully emulated. The statement is, “Lead by example, do what is right, be the best you can be, and treat others the way you would like to be treated.”…

If you are like most Christian professors, you have felt a burden for your colleagues and have wanted to reach out to them, to minister to them -- especially those closest to you. Perhaps you just haven't done so because you haven't been able to think of an appropriate way. One of the real keys of ministry is to address felt needs. Perhaps the universally perceived need of professors in academia is time management, effectiveness. What better way to minister to busy colleagues who are all under pressure to produce than to offer to help them become more effective. Dr. Joseph (Rae) Mellichamp, professor emeritus of the University of Alabama, created a set of discussion notes for the highly popular book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People that has proven useful in ministering to colleagues.…

This research paper explores the findings and teachings of Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner from 1983 through 1987. The two gentlemen spent over twenty years formulating a series of five principles that they believe every great leader should exhibit. Various group members discuss in this paper these five principles, which can be found in the book The Leadership Challenge. The first principle, model the way, is explained as a leader doing what he or she expects his or her followers to do by modeling the expected behavior at all times. The second principle, inspire a shared vision, means that an exemplary leader should also be a visionary with the ability to make his or her followers strive to reach this common goal using motivation. Principle three, challenging the process, explains how an exemplary leader takes charge, makes goals, and ensures they are completed on time or before expected. This kind of leader does not believe that things are impossible and pushes his or her followers to believe the same. Enable others to act, the fourth principle, is understood as the communication and cooperation between the leader and followers. This includes the leader understanding the strengths and weaknesses of each follower and how the common goal is affected. The last principle discussed, encouraging the heart, is the process of validating others. A leader who encourages the heart often shows a genuine interest in his or her followers, which inspires followers to take an interest in the leader’s actions. When a leader has…

Habit number 1 is Be Proactive, in the book it states that Be Proactive means; “I am the force”, and “Take responsibility for your life.” One of the biggest things I came away with from this habit is being responsible for your own behavior; past, present and future. This habit is significant for my personal like so I make choices based on values and principles and not by peer pressure. Be Proactive is a helpful habit, so you choose not to be a victim or blame others for your mistakes. Next is another one of my favorite habits, Put First Things First.…

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People is a book that demonstrates how our actions represent our ideas. For example, if we aren’t happy we will make sure others aren’t neither, we sometimes forget our values or the reason we do things. Stephen Convey teaches us the 7 habits we should learn and use on our daily life. He builds each habit by chapter and how one habit supports the other. Throughout the book I thought that it was just meant to inform me about things he had learned. However, through his experiences and ideas I was able to reflect and understand his perspective since sometimes it was similar to mine. Although I didn’t agree all the time with what he said I would recommend others to read it so they can understand how their actions have meanings at times. He wants people to understand why the do things and to focus and stay on track to reach our goals, we need to have the will…

From a young age, my father would constantly repeat two sayings to me. The first was the saying “Be careful!” The second was a phrase that continues to resonate with me: “Be a leader, not a follower.” Throughout my life and undergraduate education, I have tried to follow this mantra for my own wellbeing but also for the wellbeing of others. My parents stressed the importance of quality leadership and cultural competency from a young age.…
