4 Years At High School
Ben Martenson
English 100, Fall 2014

High school has been a very interesting experience for me. It has definitely had its highs and lows and many confusing experiences in between. Overall, I feel like I have been equipped for not only college, but also life as a whole. High school has taught me many things, both academically and emotionally. It has revealed and exposed my true colors, both good and bad, and as a result, has built many aspects of my character. My experiences at Trenton High School have shaped me into the person that I am today.
I am who I am today because of my experiences. Great or bad, they shaped me. Having two most amazing parents who always encouraged me and reminded me daily that I am defined to do great things made me believe that all great things are possible. Having a mom who taught me the importance of being kind and holding doors for any and all the young ladies whether I was dating them or not is the reason I will teach the young kids in the future under my leadership to do the same. I find myself relaying messages of kindness and encouraging others to be kind to one another daily as a result of this experience. One of my greatest experiences in life is having the opportunity to engage in Random Acts of Kindness with my family, faculty, students, and witness the smiles of the beneficiaries of our kindness. My mother, who is the queen of paying it forward, was so correct when she said, “People remember you when you are kind!”
Having a dad who gave all of his time outside of work to develop, coach, and inspire my teammates and me is what I’m going to do with my children in the future and the students. My dad would take my teammates and I to the basketball courts and pass us the ball jump shot after jump shot until our arms grew tired. He coached us not because he had to, but because he knew by doing so he would impact all of our lives in a major way. As a result of this experience there are men sprinkled around the planet

I thank my dad for bringing out the skill and mindset of an athlete. I not only use my competitive nature on the field but I also utilize it in the classroom. When I was younger, I would despise the person who got a higher grade than me. I wouldn't actually hate them, I would hate that they beat me. But when I would get the highest grade in the class I would feel like I had won the championship football game.…

Starting high school was a terrifying idea to me. Different teachers, class times, lockers, drama! I remember that I always looked up to my older sister while she was in high school. She had tons of friends, played sports, participated in student government, and went out for the school play. I wanted to be just like her when I started high school. In middle school, I lined myself up for this, I played soccer in the fall and basketball in the winter. I helped out in the school plays, and I joined the student government. I had a group of great friends, and thought nothing bad was going to happen.…

Whether it’s making my mom proud, offering to help someone with homework, or simply telling someone they look radiant. Kindness is a self-rewarding action that makes a person feel good about themselves as well as the person that they are making an impact on. Imagine if terrorists were nice to the United States, or if hunters were nice to pandas, or if the police were kind to the 136 innocent victims who were killed from police brutality just this year. Imagine if all humans were kind to one another. Then there’d be no murder or any suicides. Everybody would be happy and the world would be a much better…

High school is a different experience for everyone. The first three years really blend together and do not seem important, but senior year is completely different. Freshman year was full of confusion, learning an array of new things. Sophomore year was where life started to get fun and you “belonged” in the high school. Junior year was where you see the little light at the end of the tunnel, but it was filled with anxiety and frustration. Senior year is where it all becomes worth it and the rest of your life is finally going to begin.…

Being kind to others, listening to people , seeing others as basically good and being respectful of other people feelings have helped me in my interpersonal skills with people and also make an impact on someone else life. I was touched recently when I discovered that one of my employees was homeless and during this difficult time in her life I was observing a change in her attendance and productivity. I did meet with her and did realize that there was some underlying issues in her life and give her time to make adjustments without being very punitive in my approach. It was after this issue was resolved that she personally thanked me for my patience and humanistic approach in dealing with this…

Perseverance and work ethic: the two most important character traits that I have learned from my dad. He was born into a family of fifteen living in poverty, and, because of his hard work and determination, he has proven to me that anything is accomplishable. After obtaining a BS degree in Engineering, a Masters in Business, raising a family, and balancing life and work, my father has left a lasting impact on my life and core values. My dad was extremely involved in my life especially when I was younger. I was a daddy’s girl one hundred percent growing up. My dad got me involved in all the sports I partook in. Encouraging me, giving me lessons, and helping me become better in any way he could. My mom was normally just there for moral support but my dad was the one to push me. He encouraged me to be good at anything I wanted to do. My dad played such a strong role in my life, and helped me become who I am today. The influences he forced on me created many of the interests I still have today. I feel as if I would be a different person if he weren’t there while I was growing up. A boarding school is a school where some or all students study and live during the school year with their fellow students and possibly teachers and/or administrators. The word 'boarding' is used in the sense of "bed and board," i.e., lodging and meals. Some boarding schools also have day students that attend the institution by day and return off-campus to their families in the evenings. Some students enjoy it, some tolerate it, and some hate it. Everybody has something to say about the school they have been to. Having spent the better part of one’s formative years in any institution one naturally has strong feelings about it. I believe I am a better person because of having spent the formative years in a boarding school.…
