4 Day School Week
There are many benefits for schools to switch to a four day school week, but not all of the benefits are for students. There are “Sixty-two school districts, constituting 34% of the 178 school districts in Colorado” and those sixty two school districts “schedule 7.5 hours per day for 144 days of school instead of the normal six hours for 180 days” (Dam). By switching to a four day school week, students grades and their attendance were improved. The school saved money and since there is only four days in the school week students and teachers have an extra day to themselves.
Some schools don’t have a lot of money. What do schools do when they don’t have enough money to run the school? They start to cut programs. Switching to a four day weekend

In the state of Colorado, the “law requires school districts to schedule 1080 hours per year of instructional time for secondary schools and 990 instructional hours for elementary schools.” Switching to a four day school week changes the game for students. Instead of going to school for six hours a day for 180 days the schedule would be “7.5 hours per day for 144 days”(Dam). The seven and half hours per day would still equal the 1080 hours of education that students would need. It would take time for students and teachers to get used to the shorter schedule, but it would definitely be worth it in the …show more content…
One of the big issues with having a four day school week is that the elementary school kid’s parents don’t want them staying home by themselves during the extra day off. The way to solve the problem is to run one of the schools during that one day off. The school district could only run half of the school building to save a little more money. All of the kids that would need daycare could go to that school for the day. It saves enough money for schools not to cut programs and the little kids would have somewhere to go. Even if people don’t think this a good idea, there is always a solution to the problem that they have with the big

If there is a busy schedule between both parents during the day, Fridays off for students will help parents work and not worry about their kids if their kids were to go to a family member's house or sleep over a friend's house. Parents will save money if students go to their family or friends house instead of the parents hiring a baby sitter. A four day school week may come in handy if you have the entire Friday off to schedule appointments with doctors or dentists. If there was a Friday a student was taken out of school to go to the dentist, but the dentist was packed, he would be late to go back to school. Four day school weeks may alter that a little, say on a normal Friday, that the dentist would be full of students, but if there was no school on Friday, then there would be any line to wait in, and no rush to get back to school before school is over. The other upside of having Fridays off is that parents can do errands with out interruptions. If students have Fridays off, they can go to a friend's house so that their parents can run errands without interruption. According to Jami Dow, a mother who moved to Hot Springs, South Dakota ( a district that has a four day school week) three years ago to be closer to her parents, said, "Many families use the extra day to schedule doctor and dentist…

On the other hand, Critics believe that students should be spending more days in school rather than fewer. In fact, in the United States of America many states require school to be in session for a minimum of 180 days, which is almost three weeks less than other developed countries in Europe and Asia. For instance, China and Korea have more than 220 school days (Kingsbury). However, a four day school week will not reduce the time spent in school. It will redistribute the time going to school into four days instead of five days. Therefore the school days will be longer in a four day school week to encompass the correct amount of hours required.…

It can be hard for us to consistently give our best effort in school if there is not a longer weekend. It can be difficult for us to wake up early in the morning, before there is light outside, and efficiently work for seven hours at school. A longer weekend can help us gain more sleep time and relax from our previous week at school. Some of us may use this extra break to catch up on school work. Sometimes we may need a longer weekend to go on small vacations. A longer weekend can us time to pursue a job to earn some extra money for the many things that us teenagers must have. A longer weekend gives us more time to make choices on our own, instead of always being instructed by the school system.…

According to Jaclyn Zubrzycki, who wrote an article for edweek.org, “Others cite the financial toll involved in switching the calendar. Tourism and other industries that count on summer vacation might suffer. High schoolers might be less able to get summer jobs. And the transition brings added costs to school districts, which have to pay for (and sometimes install) utilities in buildings, stipends for teacher, or other associated expenses.” This leads to the assumption that without summer break, schools don't have enough time to add new facilities or repair facilities.…

If school was all year round students will learn more, it will help students stay focused. It will also help teachers and stuff with more jobs security. That will give the parents more time together to plan trips and vacations. It will also leave a lot of stress off their parents because they will know that they are at school and not in the streets doing whatever. I feel there will be less breaking in housing, killing and robberies.…

Although the opponents of the YRE calendar cite their reasons for their viewpoints, many of their opinions seem unfounded or ineffective when looking at empirical data comparing the traditional vs. YRE calendars. In the continuation of my research, I will be looking for more recent reports of information in regards to the effects of YRE calendars, and I will be looking to see how the trends of schools implementing the YRE calendar continues now that the President and Education Secretary have both endorsed the ideas. Additionally, my further research will look for ways this policy may advance itself, including but not limited to, increasing the hours in a school day, dramatically increasing the number of days schools are in session, or even opening schools for remedial sessions on Saturdays, a recent proposal by the Education Secretary. It is I my opinion that it will take a mix of different strategies to strengthen and increase the effectiveness of our education system, and year-round education is just one stepping stone of…

It will improve the schedule because it will eliminate unneeded electives, sync with other schools schedules, and extend prep hour. It will improve learning by giving the students the ability to ask questions, improve grades, and stay caught up. It will improve productivity by more time to grade and more time to learn. As a East Jordan public school board member, you have the power to overall improve schooling for the students. The 7 hour school schedule does not work. The school board members must change the schedule so there are only 6 classes in one day and only 6 classes for each student's schedule. It is the school board member’s job to make sure that students are getting all the education that they need in the best way possible. It makes the most sense to schedule classes this way. This schedule allows for a better learning experience and a healthier schedule for the student body. So please, for the benefit of the student body, pick the obvious choice, and switch to a 6 hour…

Some people that might not like the schedule change, would be parents. Some parents could think, that this could be the best thing, or the worst thing to happen. Some might not like it because, of the change. Parents don’t usually like change, they genuinely don’t want their children to have it harder on themselves then it already was before. Parent might not also like how the school year would still have nine week quarters, but then followed with three weeks of break. On the other hand, parents might also like it. Why parents might like it would be, that their child would not cause that much trouble around the house, or on the street. It really goes both ways in this situation, and it depends on what kind of parent you talk to.…

    Year Long School Year

Many schools in the United States are beginning to change their school calendar so their students attend class all year round. The changes still allow the students time off in the summer, but they do not have the three months of break most students in America receive traditionally. Instead, they get a break of a couple weeks in the summer, and the remainder of the time is divided up and put into other breaks throughout the year. All schools in America should switch to a year-round calendar to accommodate the different and higher level of learning needed to be successful in our changing world and society. The traditional school system was designed many years ago when our country was an agricultural nation. Therefore, the school calendar was developed having a long break in the summer so students could assist their family with cultivating crops and other aspects of farm life. The traditional school calendar was not a calendar for higher learning, and should be extended to meet the needs of modern day students. There are many explanations as to why the traditional school calendar should be changed.…

Moreover, having students stay in school for more days can help the school meet its needs. A better explanation would be schools would have no problems, economically. To prove the point, students buy snacks, lunch, parking, and materials. Students don't realize how much they help the school pay its bills such as diesel, supplies, and utility payments. The final reason school days should be shortened is to have time for spending time with family and friends. The ones you love will not be on Earth forever, so you need to treasure the time that you have left with them. Many parents work long hours during the week, and with the shorter school days, the students can finish their studies and spend time with their parents when they come home from work. Also some students need to become more social so that they can be ready for interviews in college. The students can become more social by making more friends, and they will have time for this because of the shortened school…
