Safety is always the first concern in a lab. Prior to the lab, students were asked to identify where the eye wash station was, the fire extinguisher and blanket were, and the safety shower was. When working with chemicals it is essential to wear safety glasses. Since the students were informed of which chemicals were going to be used prior to the experiment, the students should look at the Material Safety Data Sheet to see what safety concerns may come with the chemicals being used. In the experiment, the students worked with acids. To avoid spilling acids on their persons, the students used syringes to control where the acids were going to be placed. Also, at the end of the experiment, students properly disposed of the laboratory waste and washed their hands, washing away any chemicals that they may have come in contact with.…

PCR or polymerase chain reaction was developed by Kary Mullis in 1983 and can amplify one or several strands or sections of DNA to millions or even billions in a matter of hours. PCR involves a DNA sample, primers, polymerases, DNA nucleotides, a buffer and a thermocycler. The primers are complementary region to certain stretches of DNA. They mark the boarders of the DNA region one wishes to amplify and provide a place for a polymerase to bind. The standard DNA polymerase now used in PCR is isolated from Thermus aquaticus. T. aquaticus is found in hot springs and provides a heat stable polymerase that can withstand high temperature PCR conditions. This enzyme has been modified for higher…

Testing the ability to taste PTC has been a mainstay activity in human genetics for generations of teacher and students. The ability to taste PTC is inherited. Traditionally this is presented as a case of simple Mendelian inheritance involving a dominant allele for tasting and a recessive allele for non tasting of PTC. However it has long been recognized that PTC tasting is not a trait.…

Laboratory procedures and practices must be clearly communicated so that the laboratory is ensured that it‘s a safe working place and so experiments are be carried out safely. It is necessary because health and safety is important for every individual. If they weren’t understood properly there would be an increased risk of harm to all employees and if there are no clear procedures to follow, then employees may not know what to do if there is a significant hazard; this could have severe implications on their health.…

International preliminary examination is an optional feature of the international phase available under Chapter II of the PCT. It is performed by an International Preliminary Examining Authority (IPEA), one of the Offices which are also International Searching Authorities (ISAs) [see Module 7]. The receiving Office with which you filed your PCT application has appointed the IPEA which is “competent” to perform international preliminary examination. If your receiving Office has appointed more than one competent IPEA, you can choose between them, taking into account differing requirements relating to search, such as language, fees, etc.…
