Abstract— In this paper, a high efficiency and high power factor single-stage balanced forward-flyback converter merging a foward and flyback converter topologies is proposed. The conventional AC/DC flyback converter can achieve a good power factor but it has a high offset current through the transformer magnetizing inductor, which results in a large core loss and low power conversion efficiency. And, the conventional forward converter can achieve the good power conversion efficiency with the aid of the low core loss but the input current dead zone near zero cross AC input voltage deteriorates the power factor. On the other hand, since the proposed converter can operate as the forward and flyback converters during switch on and off periods, respectively, it cannot only perform the power transfer during an entire switching period but also achieve the high power factor due to the flyback operation. Moreover, since the current balanced capacitor can minimize the offset current through the transformer magnetizing inductor regardless of the AC input voltage, the core loss and volume of the transformer can be minimized. Therefore, the proposed converter features a high efficiency and high power factor. To confirm the validity of the proposed converter, theoretical analysis and experimental results from a prototype of 24W LED driver are presented.

between AC input and DC output. Even though the two-stage configuration can provide the high power factor, good output regulation and excellent ripple voltage, it has several significant disadvantages such as a large system size, high cost

Recently the spotlight has been set on renewable energies to assist with weaning off of greenhouse gas emissions, solving issues with energy independence, and to exploit their inherent renewability. Unfortunately our technology is not quite up to speed economically with our wish to rely completely on renewable energy, thus many non-renewable energies are recognized as viable options to power our economy (Fraser, 2011). The United States’ current position on diversifying with non-renewables consists of oil, natural gas, coal, and the less spoken of, nuclear power. Nuclear power is the process by which a reactor contains a slow explosion called fission, which gives off a positive net amount of energy that can be harvested. Of course the social stigma around nuclear is so strong that even if there were an undiscovered completely safe type of nuclear power plant, justifying the complex science would be challenging. After events such as Fukushima, Chernobyl, and Three Mile Island, the vast majority of society believes nuclear energy is nothing more than a death wish. Contrary to popular belief, a safer alternative in nuclear energy has been discovered and has been gaining popularity over the past few years despite the recent tragedy in Japan (Sorensen, 2011). Though newly rekindled, the non-mainstream nuclear power known as Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) was discovered in the 1960’s and had been proved to be a very attractive option to the more popular Light Water Reactor (LWR). It all began with nuclear physicist Alvin Weinberg, who would graduate from the University of Chicago soon become research director at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Weinberg was given the freedom to experiment with designing multiple types of nuclear reactors including the prominent LWR’s that are in commercial use today. Subsequently Weinberg had noted the potential danger of a LWR and moved on to designing a safer…

In this report I will explain the fuel systems in an automobile. I will cover different parts and how they work. First thing to do is explain how the fuel system works. The purpose of the fuel system is to store and supply fuel to the cylinder chamber where it can be mixed with air then vaporized and burned to produce energy. The fuel, which can be either gas or diesel is stored in a fuel tank. A fuel pump draws the fuel from the gas tank through lines and brings it through a fuel filter. Next it goes to either a carburetor or fuel injector and then delivered to the cylinder chamber for combustion.…

    1. Purpose/Introduction The environment has been in turmoil and the changing global climate has been a political topic in recent years. A major contributor to the changing environment is fuel emissions from personal vehicles. With millions of tons of car emissions being released into the atmosphere, it is obvious that the industry needs to make a change. Many car manufacturers have gone green and produce hybrid or alternative fuel-powered products. Tesla Motors takes the green movement in the personal transportation industry to a whole new level. The Model S is the newest zero-emission product in Tesla’s line. The goal behind all Tesla products is to provide customers with the luxury they desire from any other vehicle while still being socially and environmentally responsible. The preceding marketing plan will provide a situational analysis, product and target market descriptions, marketing objectives, marketing strategy and financial data projections. The goal is to bring awareness and increase market share not only to the Tesla brand but to the Model S specifically. 2. Company Description Silicon Valley based Tesla Motors was founded in 2003 by a group of engineers with a desire to develop an appealing fully electric vehicle. The company is headquartered in Palo Alto, California and just acquired an out-of-business General Motors manufacturing warehouse in Fremont, California. The new warehouse is designed to house a more efficient production process dedicated to the Model S. Tesla’s first product, the Roadster, was released in 2008 and has sold more than 1,500 products in more than 30 countries. Tesla is a vertical manufacturer, meaning that they manufacture and sell directly to end-users via company owned showrooms and website. The company sees itself as a catalyst in the personal transportation industry by…

Most of the power conversion applications consist of an AC-to-DC conversion stage immediately following the AC source. The DC output obtained after rectification is subsequently used for further stages. Current pulses with high peak amplitude are drawn from a rectified voltage source with sine wave input and capacitive filtering. The current drawn is discontinuous and of short duration irrespective of the load connected to the system. Since many applications demand a DC voltage source, a rectifier with a capacitive filter is necessary. However, this results in discontinuous and short duration current spikes. When this type of current is drawn from the mains supply, the resulting network losses, the total harmonic content, and the radiated emissions become significantly higher. At power levels of more than 500 watts, these problems become more pronounced. Two factors that provide a quantitative measure of the power quality in an electrical system are Power Factor (PF) and Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). The amount of useful power being consumed by an electrical system is predominantly decided by the PF of the system. Benefits from improvement of Power Factor include: • Lower energy and distribution costs • Reduced losses in the electrical system during distribution • Better voltage regulation •…
