Built in 1923 as a coal-powered operation, the High Bridge plant, along with Riverside in Minneapolis, once formed the hub of Northern States Power Company, a predecessor to Xcel Energy. The original plant was replaced with a new natural gas fired generating facility starting in 2005 as part of Xcel Energy's Metro Emission Reduction Project. The coal-fired plant was retired in 2007 and the new facility came on line in May 2008. (High Bridge Generating Station)…

The Direct exchange geothermal heat pump is the oldest type of geothermal heat pump technology. It is also the simplest and easiest to understand. The ground-coupling is achieved through a single loop circulating refrigerant in direct thermal contact with the ground (as opposed to a combination of a refrigerant loop and a water loop). The refrigerant leaves the heat pump appliance cabinet, circulates through a loop of copper tube buried underground, and exchanges heat with the ground before returning to the pump. The name "direct exchange" refers to heat transfer between the refrigerant and the ground without the use of an intermediate fluid. There is no direct interaction between the fluid and the earth; only heat transfer through the pipe wall. Direct exchange heat pumps are not to be confused with "water-source heat pumps" or "water loop heat pumps" since there is no water in the ground loop. ASHRAE defines the term ground-coupled heat pump to encompass closed loop and direct exchange systems, while excluding open loops.…

The increasing demand for utility services, particularly for electricity, is leading to the installation of large generation units. The power generators, in the wake of more stringent environmental regulations and restrictions, are gradually shifting their focus to renewable sources and natural gas to produce power. This is a welcome sign for the industry and a positive step towards reducing the emission of greenhouse gases.…

Abstract: This paper started with a literature survey of development the supercritical flow reactor core design, various coolant flow path designs were discussed: conventional one-pass flow arrangement, two-pass and the three-pass coolant flow geometry. A simple 1-D model was developed for the one-pass and two-pass flow design to find the maximum flow bulk temperature and case temperature in the fuel assembly. In the implementation of the model, an accurate prediction of heat transfer coefficient was vital, which was also much complicated for the supercritical flow since the flow property changed substantially at the pseudo-critical region. Study showed that classical Dittus-Bolter correlation disagreed with the experimental results significantly. The in-house CFD code, NPHASE-CMFD, was implemented on 1-D supercritical water reactor to simulate the bulk flow and case temperature distribution in the supercritical water reactor, which provided useful guidance of supercritical water reactor design from engineering purpose.…

Introductory overviewAlmost all coal, nuclear, geothermal, solar thermal electric, and waste incineration plants, as well as many natural gas power plants are thermal. Natural gas is frequently combusted in gas turbines as well as boilers. The waste heat from a gas turbine can be used to raise steam, in a combined cycle plant that improves overall efficiency. Power plants burning coal, oil, or natural gas are often referred to collectively as fossil-fuel power plants. Some biomass-fueled thermal power plants have appeared also. Non-nuclear thermal power plants, particularly fossil-fueled plants, which do not use co-generation are sometimes referred to as conventional power plants.…

To achieve optimum boiler operation and performance it is necessary to control the cleanliness and limit the fouling and slagging of the heat transfer surfaces. Historically, the heating surfaces were cleaned by air-blowing, steam-blowing, or water-blowing sootblowers on a scheduled time-based interval. With the advent of fuel switching strategies such as changing from bituminous to Powder River Basin (PRB) subbituminous coals to reduce emissions, the control of heating surface cleanliness has become more problematic for many steam generator owners. A scheduled cleaning approach does not easily address changes in operation. Also, as power plant operators push to achieve greater efficiency and performance from their boilers, the ability to more effectively optimize cleaning cycles has become increasingly important. Sootblowing only when and where it is required to maintain unit performance can reduce unnecessary blowing, save on blowing medium utilization, and reduce tube erosion and wear. The Babcock & Wilcox Company’s (B&W’s) core technology for boiler design is based on modeling of boiler heating surfaces to establish heating surface requirements and performance. The modeling process also must consider fuel types and the combustion…

    Nuclear Power Plant

The news about the earthquake and tsunami tragedy in Japan is still fresh. But what made it worst is when the nuclear power plant in Japan exploded. The event released massive amounts of radiation into the community and has infected a lot of people. Today, there is a proposal to open the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant. I admit that I am afraid of the fact that the scenario that happened in Japan might happen to us Filipinos as well. For me, I do not agree with the proposal. Opening the nuclear power plant in Bataan was proposed because it offers a lot of benefits. First, it eliminates useless paranoia and improves wealth efficiency. It can save a lot of money and can get rid of the tattletale terrors in the community. Next, our country also calls for a “culture of safety”. Our nation has to harness the strength to make responsible decisions for our country and for the world. In addition, nuclear power is relatively inexpensive. It generates into lower electricity costs for consumers. It is true that there are lots of advantages that can be obtained if the proposal will be pursued. However, the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant proposal also causes numerous disadvantages. It brings harmful or even fatal effects in the body. A nuclear meltdown can often occur which will release massive amounts of radiation into the community. Furthermore, it is too costly just to build a power plant. Maintenance and operating costs are also high because lots of money must be sent on safety systems in case something goes wrong. Lastly, it is a good place to start corruption. Public officials see this as a fire up to build projects and to raise funds that will just be placed in their own pockets. But what I really care about is my health. Everybody’s health. I do not want to experience what Japan has experienced. Even the nearby countries like Hong Kong were infected by the tragedy. Yes, we are already exposed to radiation in our everyday lives. Just simply watching…
