At the top, all that is best in Philippine life: woman, symbolizing constancy, religious faith symbolized by the tombstone, with a laurel (courage) and the flower of the pomelo, worn by bride and groom at a wedding and symbolizing purity. The words partly covered by the title are the secret, inner dedication by Rizal to his parents, the complete text being probably: 'A mis P(adres.) al escribir e(sta obra he estado) pensando continuamente e(n vosotros que me) habeis infundido los (primeros pensamientos) y las primeras ideas; a (vosotros os dedi)co este manuscrito de me (joventud com p)rueba de amor. Berlin, (21 de Febrero de) 1887.
To the left of the title, the flower mirasol, representing youth seeking the sun. The author's name, meaning the green of renewal, mounting up into the green of the most enduring of all Philippine trees, the bamboo. At the bottom, all that is worst in Philippine life: the helmet of the Civil Guard, the whip and instruments of torture, and the foot of a friar. * 4. I noticed a couple symbols in part one. One of them, obviously, is the fire or the temperature 451. The fire is meant to represent the burning books which are what destroy the freedom of thought. Another is books, those are what symbolize hope and knowledge. The hound could also be a symbol as it represents the evil in their world. In detail how they care so little about what life is anymore, in consideration to the fights they established where the hound fought animals for their own personal enjoyment.…

As the artist falls into isolation in the demanding task of its description, becoming the distanced judge of those whose judgmental detachment he condemns, so Hooper, in the obfuscation of his message, becomes tangled in what he would merely emblemize. Like the power of the purloined letter, hidden by a different sort of minister, the power of the symbol, as of the veil, lies not in its use but its concealment. "With the employment [of the letter]," Poe's narrator observes, "the power departs" (Poe 978). And similarly, the conclusive ascription of any given meaning to the veil or symbol drains the potency bonded to its mystery. By withholding until the moment of his death the presumed meaning of his symbol, Hooper maintains his lifelong grip upon his "readers," but at another price. For in concealing from them the secret of his veil, he turns the symbol into the moral reality it allegedly signifies. The minister's act implicates him in the crime of concealment that the veil symbolizes and condemns. The symbol has become its meaning, the artistic or symbolizing act a patch of the moral as well as existential darkness it illumines. It is in this sense among others that "a preternatural horror was interwoven with the threads of the black crepe" (48). And it is…

One of these things was the rosary that is being held in her hand. The rosary is a sign of her religious life. Juana Inez de la Cruz was forced into the religious life of catholicism because the Spanish came. Next to her in the painting, there are books. These books signify her intellectual life and show that she was a very smart and educated women, even though she was self-taught. She also has an escudo de monger on. An escudo de monger is basically a nun’s badge that displays the Virgin Mary. It also informs people that she will bear the son of God and spread the word of God with everyone she can. The second aspect represented on the cover is the personal context of the main characters, the Hipchicks, and the value of their innocence. This is demonstrated by the go go boots. The boots are placed in the centre of the image and are coloured white. The colour white stereotypically represents innocence and is contrasted against the green. This suggests that the girls who wear the boots are in a place where they don’t belong. Therefore, by…

It is very important to respond to Non Commission Officers because they are the back bone of the marine corps and there would be no marine corps if it wasnt for the non comission officers. I have been tought everything i know about the marine corps from ncos . Also ncos have the hardest jobs in the marine corps ,like being a drill instructor or a squad leader. They also have to be the best leaders and the most inform about any situation. Most of the time ncos know more than officers do. Marine corps Non-Commissioned Officers have tales of their combat experiences have become the stuff of legends. NCOs are the Corporals and Sergeants responsible for the lives of their men in combat. Also they must be leaders of men, but also much more. They carry with them the traditions of duty and dedication to their mission. There is a creed that every NCO lives by. the creed is" I am an NCO dedicated to training new Marines and influencing the old. I am forever conscious of each Marine under my charge, and by example will inspire him to the highest standards possible. I will strive to be patient, understanding, just, and firm. I will commend the deserving and encourage the wayward. I will never forget that I am responsible to my Commanding Officer for the morale, discipline, and efficiency of my men. Their performance will reflect an image of me. " this creed is very important ,its how th marine corps is ran because the marine corps is pracrtically ran by these ncos. Ncos have also been responsible for victoys in many major battles. Tradition holds that in the Battle of Chapultepec in 1847, Marine NCOs sustained an unusually high casualty rate during this battle. In 1849, uniform regulations dictated that the stripes be changed to a solid red. Ten years later, a red cord was inserted into the outer seams for non commissioned officers and in 1904, the simple red stripe seen today was adopted. The marine corps uniforms would not be the same if it wasnt for the Non…

The decoration above the Gettysburg address in the central group typifies Freedom and Liberty. The Angel of Truth is giving Freedom and Liberty to the slave. The shackles of bondage are falling from the arms and feet. They are guarded by two sibyls. The group to the left represents Justice and Law. The central figure in the Chair of Law has the Sword of Justice in one hand; with the other she holds the Scroll of the Law. Seated at her feet are two sibyls who are interpreting the Law. The standing figures on each side are the Guardians of the Law, holding the torches of intelligence. The group to the right represents Immortality. The central figure is being crowned with the laurel wreath of Immortality. The standing figures are Faith, Hope, and Charity. Symbolism in O’Brien’s The Things They Carried runs rampant and plays a part in conveying the author's message. O’Brien uses symbols to link ideas together. Symbols can be decrypted by the reader to unearth the true essence of the work. Symbols appear in all forms in the work, recurring as both tangible and intangible. O’Brien chooses to embed symbols everywhere in the text, in the structure, the characters. Some symbols are more discreetly hidden than others, and some are out in the open and should be able to be picked up by a competent reader. The role of symbols in The Things They Carried is to show hidden messages, address the theme of the whole work, engage the reader in reading, and expose the fictionality of the work.…

Repetitive symbolism is rampant throughout Fahrenheit 451 and contributes passionately to its iconic status today. There are three specific symbols that Ray Bradbury uses to show the religious essence of his novel and to enhance the meaning of Fahrenheit 451. The main religious symbols are sprinkled throughout the novel and contribute to Guy Montag’s growth as an intellectual and as a member of the corrupt society. The symbols of the snake, the phoenix and the fire, are used in the text to aid Montag’s character development and the overall theme of Fahrenheit 451.…

The standard allegorical interpretation inspired by Panofsky studies the iconology of the portrait. The dog standing between the couple, for instance, is interpreted to be either a symbol of fidelity in the marriage (“Jan Van Eyck’s Arnolfini Wedding Portrait”), or as an symbol of erotic sexual tension (Adams). The solitary burning candle in the chandelier above the couple is seen as the “all seeing wisdom of God”. The convex mirror behind the couple is also seen as a symbol of the all seeing eye of God. An ornamental sculpture on the rear bed post is interpreted as the image of Saint Margaret, the patron saint of childbirth, suggesting fertility in the marriage. This theme is repeated in the still life depictions of the oranges on the table and window sill behind the male subject, as fruit is linked with fertility. Still others interpret the fruit to be a symbol of innocence at the beginning of marriage. The two pairs of discarded shoes are commonly believed to be symbolic of the bed chamber being “holy…

In the picture by Hieronymus Bosch, The Seven Deadly Sins and The Last Four Things, you see several points of interest. There are four little circular pictures that surround a larger picture. Of these four that include death of sinner, judgment, glory and hell. This is what happens to a person after he commits the last deadly sins. Of the seven they include: wrath, greed, envy, gluttony, sloth, pride and lust. These are sins that the average human being commits on a daily basis. At the very center of the painting is a picture of Jesus. He represents the eye of God, the pupil.…

Rizal asked himself when he was writing the Noli Me Tangere, whether ‘bravery’ is a common thing in the women of our people. And there was, it is true, an abundance of girls with agreeable manners, beautiful ways, and modest demeanor, but there was in all an admixture of slavery and deference to the words or whims of their so-called ‘spiritual fathers’ due to excessive kindness, modesty, or perhaps ignorance. They seemed faded plants sown and reared in darkness, having flowers without perfume and fruits without sap, according to Rizal.…
