• Explain The Difference Between Functional Conflict, Functional And Dysfunctional
Conflict is an inevitable part of the daily lives of citizens everywhere regardless if it is occurring in personal relationships, outside relationships, or even in the workplace. Though often thought of as negative, conflict is a necessary part of life and doesn’t always have to be viewed as with negative undertones. There are two types of conflict, functional and dysfunctional. Though the negative perception conflict carries with it, in regards to in the workplace, functional conflict can be a tool used to promote productivity and challenge staff to resolve issues that may arise internally and focus on problem solving techniques that may be used to strengthen an organization (Larkin, Pryor,Singleton, Taneja &, Toombs, 2011).

Utilizing more of a non-traditional approach to suppressing negative conflict and stimulation positive conflict can be achieved by exploring the interests and goals that conflicting employees are trying to achieve, look at the common ground between the two, and also look at each employee’s individual needs and put the conflict into prospective by creating a plan that would expose how both are trying to achieve the same goal, both have different approaches, and collaboration between the two would erase the divide they have created interdepartmentally with not only themselves but others(Corcoran, 2014 ). This type of conflict resolution style allows police officers to have conflict, but teaches them an effective way to work through the conflict through communication and in the end will create a department whose employees have effective conflict management skills will promote fidelity amongst all and create a better forum that allows for effective investigations skills by using the tools they learned to try different approaches and keep the goal the same while understanding there may not be a right or wrong approach and variety in approaches may be the key to solving the crime which was the intended goal in the first …show more content…
In policing there is emphasis on professionalism and finding a balance between conflict and professionalism can be a problematic combination. With that said, failing to discuss important topics to avoid conflict is a sure way to ensure that strife and divides amongst employees are created and issues that need resolution are ignored which leads into dysfunctional conflict within the organization (Dee, 2014).
Managers are in the position to combat not only internal conflict within police agencies but also external. Techniques for combating both can be similar in procedure but strive for different outcomes. In policing there is a paramilitaristic hierarchy that prompts respect for higher ranking officers (King,2003), and demands respect while dealing with conflict. But with that in mind, problem solving techniques can implemented by management to stimulate functional conflict

This model of collaboration involves conflict and debate that phenomenally leads to a solution of the problem discussed. Managers have two options when conflict arises, they can take a hands off approach or a hands on approach.
